The Peach/Palmetto Cup
« on: January 16, 2003, 07:26:10 AM »
Announcing the first annual Peach/Palmetto Cup.

I will try to schedule a Saturday round at Cateechee on March 29, with drinks and dinner afterwards. Mike Young has volunteered to do a talk on the course, enviro issues, designing for clay v. sand terrain, etc. Others with projects, restorations, etc. that are afoot in the region are also invited to present. Let me know if we should reserve some time for you or your project.

For those that want to stay over, an optional Sunday round (March 30) can be arranged.

March 29/30 is the weekend before the Masters. With that event on the horizon, one of the presentations on Saturday night will focus on dealing with picket lines, tear gas and bail bondsmen. Direct dial numbers for attorneys in Augusta will be handed out.

Other dates are certainly possible, but let's start with March 29/30 and see how workable it is for the group. Let me know.

If those dates seem to work for people, I will get back with everyone on costs, specific tee times, etc.

On the Matt Ward model (remember, he's from New Jersey), you will have to get train ridin' cash in my hands at the appropriate time to reserve a place. No walk-up entries. More later.

Others outside of GA and SC are welcome to come and I hope they will. (Ran, John Stiles, Doug Stein, Turbo, how about it?) Cateechee can handle lots of people, the golf will be first rate and the setting should be beautiful.

Most important, it will be a chance to meet people in the region who have played, loved and hated many of the same courses over the years.

Let me know. Email me at rcrosby@phrd.com with your interest, availability, ideas, etc. I will report back to the goup as things develop.

Bob

P.S. Isn't a Palmetto just a big tropical weed?

As stated before, I know not of my schedule right now, but I would like to be a tentative "yes" for the "empire state of the south" side.

Thanks

Keith.

My schedule is the same as above, but I would be interested in playing for ATL.

I sent Bob an e-mail.  I think it would be fun to do this. If we're lucky, maybe some of the Tar Heels could come down from above (Ran, Scott, etc).
But, I hope it will work out, I love that golf course. . .

Rob - Tarheels!!! Let's save that for the "Battle of the Carolinas." ;D I'm confident we will get plenty of participants from SC and GA.

Bob - I've got several SC players who will come on the 29th. Do we want to try and hit a target number of players and limit it to that? How many do we need committed to make this a sure thing?

I have received indications from 11 people that they want to attend. Again, the dates are March 29/30. A couple are confirming that their schedules will work.

A terrific early response. I think this might be a go.

Mike Young has confirmed to me that the course and four suites upstairs at Cateechee are available for those that want to stay over. I'm not sure how many the suites will sleep. There are also several nearby B&B's that are supposed to be very nice.

Mike has also confirmed that he will give a talk on the course and some of the design/environmental issues he struggled with there. He will also touch on other architectural issues unique to the SE piedmont area such as clay soils, drainage, heat, turf, etc. Should be interesting, though Mike said he will only permit questions if they are very, very easy ones. ;)

As before, anyone interested in attending should email me at:

rcrosby@phrd.com

I am compiling addresses for a mailing (probably early next week) with more details. I can also post that information here if people think it would be useful.

Again, the gathering is not limited to those from the mighty Peach State or its neighbor to the east with the weird state flag. All are welcome.

Looking forward to seeing you at the first P&P Cup.

I would like to recertify my interest in playing for the Georgia side.

The only thing that would change that would be if I came across Masters tix for more than 2 days (I would run out of hall passes).  Any donors?

Sounds like things are coming along well, that is great.

I am in for the SC side.

It would be interesting to hear how many respondents we have for each side.  I would guess that we are quite a bit lighter on the SC side.

Good stuff.

Count me in as well for the Georgia side!  I host a weekly golf radio talk show on WCNN - 680 The Fan.  I will hype it on the air as well.  My co-host is an Atlanta resident, but South Carolina native and Gamecocks alumnus.  He'll be up for it as well - not sure which side he'll play for.

I'll also look into doing a remote broadcast of my show from the course that morning.  We'll need the course to kick in some $$$ in order to do it, but they might be interested in doing some advertising anyway - we have a 50,000 watt signal, so people in South Carolina can tune in.

Email me to discuss further details.

Bob there is nothing I would like more than to make it. It is so close after the Kings Putter that it may be difficult since I will not be home till the 24th. Is the event in Atlanta or nearby, John

Bob,

It is a long shot, but I may be in Atlanta (from NYC) for business around that time. Roughly, how far is the course from Atlanta?
