GregH:
The primary goals of Davis and his design team with the Forest Oaks renovation are to update the course to keep up with modern technology and to redesign the greens in a traditional style more fitting with Maples' original design intent.
The existing golf corridors are being utilized, although several holes will undergo extensive changes. All the tees are being rebuilt with length added where possible in the form of new tournament tees. The overall length of the course will be increased, yet a couple of holes have actually been shortened to create variety and add risk/reward opportunities. The bunkers are being reconstructed and will feature grass faces, additional bunkers in the 285-300 yard range are being added for obvious reasons (after watching Ernie Els for the last two weeks, 310-325 may be more appropriate
).
The biggest change will be in the redesign of the greens. As mentioned earlier, they will be more traditional in style with design elements that should be pleasing to many of the people in this DG. I will not go into design details except to say visibility has been greatly enhanced, for both player and spectator, and creativity in the short game should be rewarded.
Forest Oaks used to be a favorite stop on the PGA Tour and we are certainly hoping that it will be again in the future. However, if we can make the membership happy with our changes for 51 weeks out of the year, then we will consider our job a success.
