Black Creek
« on: January 17, 2003, 07:03:46 PM »
Congrats to Black Creek for being named the host of the Chattanooga Classic on the Nationwide Tour, July 31-Aug 3.

I was fortunate to play there last March and I really enjoyed it.  It will be fun to see how the pro's fare on this Seth Raynor-inspired course!

Of course the write up on Black Creek on GCA is well done with some nice photos.  Doug Stein used to weigh in here often, but haven't seen any posts by him lately.  I hope that nationwide event has some broadcast coverage on TGC.  It is one of the courses I would truly love to see next time through the area.

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

You should definately make it a point to see Black Creek during your next visit to the area.

It is a must-see.

Doesn't look as though TV coverage is an option for '03 because of the last minute commitment.  This year's event is in the middle of the summer and hopefully the weather will cooperate by providing dry conditions.  Firmness is our best defense.  But starting in '04 I think it will be a spring event and have television coverage.  Black Creek does not overseed so an early May event should be interesting.

Black Creek is delightful in the truest sense of the word.  The Raynor inspired holes, notably the Short 3rd with thumbprint, Alps 6th, Reverse Redan 7th, Redan 11th and Biarritz 17th are honest examples of their prototypes, though the drop-shot nature of the 11th accomodates a direct approach.  While these reknowned holes are familiar to many of you in the northeast,  there are few examples within 500 miles of Black Creek, so they offer a wonderful educational experience as well.  In that sense, I APPRECIATED the golf course.

It would be a mistake to dismiss the remaining holes.  They are perhaps the course's strength.  I particularly liked the second, where the drive down the corner of the left-hand dogleg yields a short approach that is made dicey by a Road Hole style bunker running from 5 to 11 o'clock.  The better angle from the outside of the dogleg requires that the drive flirt with a deep and intimidating bunker.

I love the tenth, which is pictured in the course profile.  There is no defined corridor of play, but rather a large playing field providing numerous options off the tee.

Two 4's at the 12th and 13th are highly coveted given their length and rare true fairway bunkering.  They are smartly followed by two holes where the player expects to make par or birdie, with the blind second shot off a side hill lie the key at the par 5 14th.

At Black Creek, I learned that photographs do not do any Biarritz justice.  Rarely have I played a hole that was simultaneously so fun and challenging.  The architect, developer and super deserve much credit for building and maintaining the expansive putting surface.  Put simply, it is a blast to play this hole and the entire  course for that matter.

Sorry to be such a cheerleader, but so few courses are challenging, fun and educational.

Regards,

Mike

Just to let you guys know, I do still log in from time to time, but the demands of my daily business have curtailed my participation.
Plus, I don't want to come off as being merely a cheerleader for Black Creek, of which I am an owner.
That being said, I continue to be very pleased with and proud of the course, which is a better realization of what I like in a golf course than I ever would have dared dream for that site.
Now, if Mike Keiser (Bandon Dunes) would loan me a little tract on the Pacific coast, I could have some more fun!
I am going to Mountain Lake this week to check out the renovation there....
If someone will tell me how to post photos I will get you guys some!
By the way, I use a Mac (OS X Jaguar) so if I need special instruction, please pass it along... Ran?

You could search and find at least this August 2002 vintage thread,.. below.  i asusme there's older threads as well

GolfClubAtlas.com / Golf Course Architecture / Re: posting images ON GCA  on: August 24th, 2002, 12:15am

So...first, the photos you want to post MUST reside somewhere on the WEB...and not in My Yahoo photos or something similar.  This is the most important aspect of posting photos on GCA.  Once your photos are on the web, you are golden.

To actually get the photos to appear within a thread on GCA, you simply start a new thread, or respond to a current one. In your text response, you will include UBB CODE directed to the image which resides on the web.  Here is a link to an explanation of how to properly use and incorporate UBB code:

http://www.windyhop.org/ubb/ubb2/ubbcode.html

It is really quite simple.  For an image to appear, you just sandwich the actual URL (or location info) between the codes [*img] and [*/img] (without the *).  As an example:

yada, yada, yada text

[*img]http://www.efleisher.com/EvanFleisherPortraitSmall.jpg[*/img]

yada, yada, yada text

When you post this reply, you will see the actual text, then the image, then the additional text.  A few things to remember about posting images:

* Image Size...you may have to play around with the images actual size. Sometimes, photos appear too large within the thread and are hard to view without having to scroll around.  You can use an image resizing program to change the picture dimensions making it easier to view online.  If you have
to do this, just re-save the new image online and it will simply replace the old one.

* File Size...everyone wants to see a clear picture, but if the image file size is too big, the webpage will take forever to load.  try to minimize the image's file size to around 50-200KB.  If you have bigger image file sizes (like 800KB-1.2MB), then use a similar image manipulation program to resave the file under a smaller size.

OK, Paul, I'm going to try this again... but so far all I can do is post the pics from the website. I am traveling this week, and I will be trying to get a homepage up somewhere JUST to post pics so I can send them to GCA. I will be taking some at Mountain Lake starting tomorrow.
This is the Biarritz 17th at Black creek, with the pin front left. We put the pin on the front portion 40% of the time, the back 60%. For fun we put the pin in the swale about twice a year. The hole plays about 175 to a front pin, 225 or so to the rear, including the downhill. The card lists the hole at 211, but it never plays that, since that is the center of the green, in the swale.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course.  Course setup and maintenance by Scott Wicker and crew is also very good.

My favorite is the Spine, hole no 16.  It is a very interesting green.  I concur with the others ....read the GCA post as it would take too long to discuss every hole in this posting.

Best wishes to Doug Stein, King Oehmig, Gary Chazen, et al. with Black Creek and tournament.

If you visit Black Creek,  also try and play nearby Lookout Mountain Golf Club.

Doug:

Thanks for the pics.

I too enjoyed my visit tremendously and, like John Stiles, would also recommend seeing Lookout Mountain while visiting this area.
