Trip to Bandon
« on: February 11, 2005, 10:19:00 AM »
I've scheduled a trip to Bandon the last week of July 2005, arriving Wednesday, playing Pacific Dunes 18 on Thursday, Bandon Dunes 18 in the morning and Trails 18 in the afternoon on Friday, Pacific Dunes 18 again on Saturday, Bandon Trails in the morning and Bandon Dunes in the afternoon on Sunday.  We're a group of 8, staying in the "Grove House" which I understand is currently being constructed.  Flying in to Portland, connecting to a flight into North Bend.

I would appreciate any travel, dining and extracuricular activity recommendations those of you who have had the pleasure of making this trip would suggest.

Thank you as always for your advice.

Regards

Jeff

Sounds to me like you have everything perfect, Jeff.  Golf, flights, lodging, it's all perfect.

You really don't need anything else.  I supposed you ought to inquire about playing Sheep Ranch - just ask them, it can be done - and fit that in somewhere, somehow... but beyond that, you have everything set A-1 perfect.

Re extracurriculars and dining, well.. you really need never leave the resort.  There are two very worthwhile pubs, also several restaurants, and the food is great.  Oh, some might suggest you go into the little town of Bandon, and there is a restaurant there called the Crow's Nest that is ok, but it's really not worth getting in the car for.  I'd say the ONLY reason you head into Bandon is if you have some guys VERY VERY VERY hard up for female companionship - because you sure as hell won't find that at the resort.  Hell, you damn likely won't find it in Bandon also, but 1% chance is more than 0%.

Re daytime extracurriculars, that's moot as you won't have time for any with the golf sked you have.  Nor SHOULD you devote any time for such.   ;)

I'm going with a group of 16 in June.  Went with three buds a few years ago.

Black Butte Porter on tap.

Something with salmon.

I'm usually pretty beat after walking 36 in a day to do much else.

Scott is wise.   ;D

Add to that:

GRANDMA THAYER'S MEATLOAF SANDWICH
(known as the Volcano, so named by our own Tommy Naccarato, methinks).

Your taste buds will thank me.  Your cardiologist will hate me.  But it must be tried.

After 36 holes of walking in the wind you probably aren't going to want to do too much other than crash, unless you and your group are finely tuned athletes.  But if you do go into town, the Old Town is kind of cute in a rustic sea-side village kind of way.

If you want to see what's there, the web site bandon.com is a good resource.

There are at least two fine restaurants - the Wild Rose and Lord Bennetts - although the food at the resort is first rate, if you decide to stay there to eat.  There are some neat art places.  The walk around the beaches in town and just south are awesome.  Other than that there isn't a whole lot to do in the area.

Beachcombing at Face Rock State Park is fun.  Lots of agates.  You can also do whale watching there.

Some great fish & chip places (hallibut) in town.

Bandon is also a cranberry center, so you can get a lot of cranberry-oriented dishes in Bandon.

If you have a car, some of the byways (gravel-surfaced) heading up into the Coast Range are very beautiful.  You can also travel north up 101 to the Oregon Dunes Rec Area - lots of fun dune buggy trips there.

I think the resort also has a number of trails through the dunes.

Dan:

That's great stuff... and he did ask... but look at his golf sked - when the heck is he gonna fit ANY of that in?

But anyway, ATTENTION BRIAN GRACELY.. please direct your brother to Dan's post.  Perhaps my dire warnings that there is nothing at all for a non-golfing wife to do are a bit of an exaggeration.

One other thing - try to sit on the left side of the plane on a window.  You'll think you're going to land on Mt. Hood as you approach PDX airport.

If you're on the right side, the views of Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Ranier are also very good.

Tom - my golfing wife and I loved strolling around Bandon.  There's the lighthouse area, 'downtown', and lots of other fun, relaxing activities.  Some pretty good local art there too.

Dan - very well - it's good to hear that such things are possible.

No offense though, but I'd have a hard time convincing my non-golfing wife of Bandon as a viable vacation spot, even though these do sound like viable activities.

If she played the game, sure.. and we'd likely handle it just as you did.  But then I'd be fuming as we strolled the beach during daylight that could be devoted to playing those courses.  I can stroll some pretty fine beaches, see great art and plenty of lighthouses here in the Bay Area.  I sure as hell can't play golf courses like this very readily.

He's probably teeing off on Bandon Dunes as we speak, so any advice at this point is mute.  He got the Huckaby standard "play lots of golf and order the Volcano", so he should be fine. ;)  The wife can make up for any boredom by making him go to some fancy restaurant in Portland for V-Day....or snuggle...or whatever the heck she feels is a fair trade-off ;D

You guys are the best...I mean it.

The wives for this group did hint at wanting to come along....we are taking the 2 four bedroom suites at the Grove House so there would be plenty of room, but we were able to convince them that they would be very, very bored.

We are only playing 18 on two of our days, both days on Pacific Dunes, with starting times of about 11AM, so there might be time for some of the suggested activities that have been presented.  As "travel director" for this group I just wanted to present all the options available, and as always, the men of GCA have done the job asked of them.  Thank you again.

Grandest of all wazos:  you and I are copacetic on all of this, my friend.  There was also some talk in my group about bringing the wives, and I handled it exactly like you have.  Bottom line for me is trips with the wives COULD be done, but there are SO many better places than Bandon for that, for so many reasons.   ;)  As travel director of my group, I too have been asked for such things... but my advantage is half of the guys have already been there, so I don't have to do much convincing.  Our group is also VERY much geared toward heavy meat and potatoes and heavier drinking.  We're all from a Jesuit university, after all.

Bandon is the absolute poster-resort for a golf-nut guys only trip.  Everything is geared for it... the pubs, the beer, the food, the rooms, everything is geared for groups like ours, male only.  Oh, women CAN and DO have fun there, particularly those that golf... But the huge TVs in the rooms, and two separate enormous bath room areas, and the spartan but comfortable decor and furniture... well that ain't geared toward the typical female, that's for sure.

Now Mr. Gracely, I'm sure you're brother will make out just fine, pardon the pun.  Hell it's impossible NOT to enjoy Bandon.  I just did want you to see that there is another perspective besides my dire one.   ;D

If you can make Lord Bennett's near sunset, the view is worth it. Good rock formations. Fore other coastline views go north to Charleston and out to Shoreacres and Sunset Beach. There is also the Old Mill Casino in Coos Bay.

Bandon itself is nothing to get too excited about with 2 exceptions.
The little blue shack on the front selling fish and chips is out of this world. Really! The only great F and C I've ever had in 16 years over here.
Also - my bearings are not too great, but, keeping the ocean to your right, walk to the last bar in town, just past the fishing pier. They have a legal blackjack table.

Huck,
"The Volcano" was aptly named by Jim Urbina during the construction of Pacific Dunes. My only contribution to that name was after having it four times in three days when at Bandon. (I love meatloaf, but its one of the many things I can't have anymore)

The resulting explosion in the bathroom was reminescent of Mt. St. Helens. I cannot confirm, make that, don't want to confirm if this is what Jim had in mind when naming it, but the heaping pile of mash potatoes would be probably be a safest bet! :o

GrandWazo,

I'm shocked that noone has mentioned the Casino on the main highway near North Bend, it's probably a 30-45 drive from Bandon.

I've never been in it, but for 8 guys looking for something to do, it might be a viable alternative to putting in your room.

I mentioned the casino at reply #13, and I've never been inside.

I've been to the casino.  Reminds me of the ones at Apache Stronghold, Barona Creek and Circling Raven - forgetable after-golf side shows only.

Jonathan,

What's the alternative ?

Have you heard the expression, "The only game in town" ?

It beats night putting, unless you're with the Dean's daughter.

For those who decide to drive from Portland to Bandon be advised there is a speed trap on I-5 at Coburg, which is just a few miles north of Eugene.

Your there. just play golf and more golf. Most of us on here bias top heavy rounds at Pacific Dunes which I highly endorse.
