DOAKS CONFIDENTIAL GUIDE ON E BAY
« on: February 10, 2005, 11:49:20 AM »
Three copies of this book are up for auction at this time, for anybody that is interested.
I have recently been searching for this book at a number of places and the best price I have found is $299..

Is there anyway we can get Mr Doak to persuade the publishers to re issue the book...I am sure everybody on this site would purcahse a copy!!

Any comments ?

Kyle - if you were smart, you'd buy your B&N copies and sell them to us!

Where exactly is this B&N?

Does the copy have the publishing error on page 28 (where the description of GCGC was replaced with the description of Durban found on page 24)? Maybe this is what makes the copy so valuable - like the old US airmail stamp with the airplane printed upside down.  ;)

I just called Barnes and Noble in both Willow Grove and Jenkinton.  Neither had the book so don't bother.  I was also not the first to call.  The lady at Willow Grove said that I was the 4th caller on this book in the last 45 minutes.

Yep,

My fault, I saw it two weeks ago... didn't even know it was out of print.

I just ran up to the Jenkintown B&N during my lunch break (I work in Jenkintown)... and the lady said the same thing.

For those wondering, the opening (and minimum) bid is at $200, placed 10 minutes ago.  Buy It Now is set at $500.  Sheesh.

I have just spent the last hour or so doing extensive reasearch on finding this book. :)..forget it..unless you are very lucky to stumble upon it at a book store..or willing to pay $299.

Guys,

According to Tom Doak's website, they purchased the rights back from Sleeping Bear Press.  They may republish the Confidential Guide sometime in 2005-2006.

You can't get one from Sleeping Bear Press anymore and the copies on E-Bay are rarely going for anything under $350.

It never ceases to amaze me what the big deal is about this book.  OK, I could understand the error version as a collectible - MAYBE.  But even that shouldn't command these crazy prices.

We are talking about the normal, published version, right?

I picked one up right there on the shelf of my B&N in San Jose, CA a few years ago.  I was actually pissed it cost as much as it did - $30 or something.

And it is a fun reference, but really dated... that is lots of the info is great as of 1996 or whatever, but out of date now.

Hey, I am a huge fan of Doak's other books... this one though, well I just don't get it.

Now if they were trying to sell the original uncensored version, well that I could understand.  But that's NOT what's being sold on ebay now, is it?

TH

ps - by the way, anyone who really wants one can sure as hell have mine.  Starting price is $345. (See what a heart I have)  ;)  Call it a contribution to the "defray Huckaby's costs for Bandon and Sand Hills 2005 fund."

I will not undercut Mr. Huckaby, but I have an extra book in mint condition that will go for $350.00.

The usual, well-done, understated zinger.  You'd do well on The Price is Right.

Huck,

Knew about the first trip, not the second.  As usual, it's good to be Huckaby.   ;)

If anyone wants multiple copies, either for pleasurable or speculative purposes, I'm sure Mr. Huntley and I could be persuaded to allow for a package price.

 ;)

And Scott, well... as you can imagine, these type of things extract a VERY high price, and I don't mean monetarily.  It's not THAT good to be me.   ;)

I can't seem to find the listing of the books (Confidential Guide) mentioned above on eBay anymore.  Either all 3 were bought at Buy It Now prices of $500 (unlikely) or the seller took them down, as they had 6 days left in the auction.  They were not up long enough to get cached into Google's memory to see what happened to them.

Huckaby as the voice of reason?  I shudder. And offer my pristine copy for $355.  Mr. Huntley just cost me $15 since I would undercut The Huckster in a heart-beat, but not the man in the John Deere baseball cap.

Huckster,

I am sooo with you on this one.  I like Tom but the book is now outdated some of the reviews were done quickly and should be taken as they are just a guide.  It is a good book but it is not worth $300 and I even own a copy.

This is a scary day, Mike.
 ;D
And once again Mr. Huntley comes to my aid... have I mentioned it's nice to have the right kind of friends?

Brian - thanks for the confirmation - I really thought it was just me.  Oh, that does happen, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise... but this is all really a head-scratcher to me.

I have one that is autographed by Tom Doak.  I'll sell it for $500 (seriously).

Joel - you think I'm kidding about selling mine?

 ;D

It's not autographed, but I have a feeling I could take care of that if I really tried.  Anyone who pops in an extra $150 can have that service as well.  I'll even autograph it myself, and deduct $5 from the bid.  The following extra autographs will be obtained at the additional costs listed:

Bob Huntley:  $100.  I'll get him to pen in a personal quip as well.

Ed Getka:  $25.

Mike Benham:  $25

Gib Papazian:  $250 (that means he will have come out of exile, which makes the cost worthwhile).

shivas:  $40 (I have to factor in shipping cost).

JakaB AND Geoffrey Childs, side by side:  $250 (shipping plus diplomacy charges).

That's it for now.  Any other requests will be accomodated, within reason.

I'm curious....

Are people interested in this book for a collectable, or are they interested in just reading the context of the book?

Huck - I'm with you on the Confidential Guide... never understood the fascination. I sold mine on Ebay three or four months ago.
