MOST UNDERRATED SUPERINTENDENT
« on: December 17, 2004, 07:13:41 PM »
I nominate Eddie Adams. It was a joy working for him during the 2000 Open and I think the EPGA's gain is the Old Course's loss.

Ian,

I agree... I have never played it but have walked the course. I have heard nothing but good things.

I agree with Brad.  The most underrated is that guy, whose names we all forget, who works over at the locally owned "mom and pop" daily fee course, who puts in 12-16 hour days trying to cobble together equipment and materials to provide some semblance of decent playing conditions with a budget that is less than outfits like the Kohler courses spend on uniform and laundry services for their staff. ::)  Here is to those fellows... old what's his name. :-[

This May Deepdale was in great condition when Garden City was a mess.

Any super who owns and operates his own course.  Particularly those that have holes / courses on flood plains.

Great job Joe!

Eddie,
Any superintendent who gave up the guardianship of the greatest course the world has ever known, to go babysit a bunch of high-paid pansies, has his priorities all tossed-up!

None the less, you got my vote! ;D

Steve Curry - in your case, I think the $200,000 covers what, about 11 holes at Berkshire Hills? Whatever the amount, and I can't imagine it's a lot, you're doing a heck of a job.

Anybody ever hear about an interesting modus operandi at a high profile course whose maintenance budget was definitely on the high end, maintenance sort of screwed up on the course, and the next year the club cut back on the maintenance budget apparently under the theory that if you can't do well on a budget on the high end maybe you can do better on a lower budget?   ;)

Tom,

I think you'll find that most really good superintendents (high, medium or low budget) have had some experience at a "do more with less" type operation. The really good supers have a creativity about them that allows them to think beyond the resources as an excuse and get he job done. Some supers thrive in that atmosphere so much so that they choose to stay at the type of club that requires the "do more with less" attitude. It's a different kind of challenge.

Are you really asking if some supers might be better at what they do if they actually did have less? (irrigation?)..... ;D

No question anyone that preps for an Open is a pretty darn good super.

BUT...with the free equipment, the hundreds of volunteers, the outside agronomist help ,the years of preperation, any course hosting a major had better look good.

I'd too would cast my vote for the "most underrated sup." to the person that gets the job done with limited resources.

I take back what I said. I was lying. I was drinking. I had a head injury. Eddie Adams? I was on acid. What was I thinking?

I nominated him for most overrated superintendent and my post was taken down.

It's about time. If you had listended to me years ago none of this would have happened, but you had to be the big man and do it your way.
Whatever.

Any super with at least 36 holes.  They normally get the same pay as someone with 18 holes yet double the staff and double the problems.
