British Isles Top 100
« on: December 17, 2004, 06:20:14 AM »
I found this site www.top100golfcourses.co.uk a while back and forgot about it.  They are slowing building up a useful catalogue of information.  In addition, these guys do a unique ranking system.  They also give a punters' rating of up to 6.  It is interesting to see what the punters think compared to the experts.

Ciao

There are actually 253 courses rated.  I know I've said it before but we have some wonderful courses which never make the ranking lists.  The Addington is somewhere beyond 200.  There are rather a lot of Oxfordshires and Hanbury Manors, Carden Parks and Londons too high up the rankings for my taste, but who am I to argue with them?

Sean - How would you translate "punter" into American? I've heard it often and have never been quite sure what sort of baggage the word carries.

"Punters are the chaps who pay for their pints and green fees!"

Sorry to be so thick-headed, but do you mean as opposed to club members who put it on their tab?

So are you saying that in English terms, comp'd raters are considered experts?

Sean -

Let me ask the question a different way. If I were playing Cumberwell Park, how would I be able to spot the punters?

Or is it the case that if you are looking for punters, you won't find them? ;)

Anyone that parts with their dosh/hardearned/wedge, is a punter.

BCrosby,

I think our British friends are 'taking the piss'.

'Punter' is simply a slang term for people/fans/customers, whether they pay or not, although generally it does refer to paying customers.

In Sean's case, as in comparing punters to experts, I believe he is simply referring to you and I, the 'ordinary' everyday folk, whereas the 'experts' are magazine raters.
