GCA Outing with the Ladies
« on: December 01, 2004, 09:55:43 AM »
Behave gentlemen, not those kind of ladies, I mean your significant others!

So my better half just looked over my shoulder and asked what I was talking about re:  Kohler v. Bandon and it struck me, especially after Huck mentioned the marital difficulty of getting away . . .

Would anyone be interested in a mini-GCA summer outing where we brought our significant others, golfers and non-golfers both?

I imagine that a spot like Kohler would be perfect.  Since I imagine this group advocates family values, and since I'd not want to see GCA disrupt relationships any more than it does in our home with battles over computer time, does anyone else find this an interesting idea?

I imagine it could be as competitive or relaxed as we'd like.

Thoughts?

Since my wife is an avid golfer, yes, I find this an interesting idea. I'm sorry I missed the Canadian trip last summer as I'd like to go there. I'm planning a CO trip in the summer or fall to play the Engh Trail- Sanctuary, Lakota and Redlands Mesa.

Jason:

No offense, but at least in my world, that is an absolute no-way can't do.  I prefer to keep my worlds separate and the less my wife knows about this world the better.  Oh, we've had this conversation before on here and many have tried to convince me I'm wrong about this.  But believe me fellas, I know my wife and I know my situation.  And yep, the less she knows about all this, the better.  She thinks I'm WAY too into golf as it is and thinks I'm crazy as all hell to meet up with people from what she calls an "internet chat room."  I can't even imagine the conversation required to get her to attend such a thing herself....

But these are just my issues.  I also have always thought of golf as a guy thing, time to get away from wives and families, but that's my issue also, fed by the fact my wife hates the game and on top of that I know very few female golfers.

So for those of you who don't have these issues, well that seems like fun.  I envy you, in a way.  But I don't in a way, also, as it is fun to have one's own thing.   ;)

So while this is a good idea and I'd say you have a good heart to suggest it, Jason - just don't expect universal positive response to this, as I'd guess I am not alone in my issues....

As you can tell from my Bandon/Kohler post , my wife plays, though not as enthusiastically as I do. In fact, part of our marraige agreement was that she had to pick up golf and I had to pick up scuba--we both won.
I like your idea of a "family" oriented GCA outing, though I've never even made it to a "regular" GCA outing.  We are, however, limited in our ability to get away as we have 3 kids 4 and under (thus my desire to "get away from it all" in the Bandon/Kohler post). But if something evolves here, I'll make every effort to get in.

I'm w/ Huck here. No matter how great our wives are, mixing them into a full blow 12+ guys golf outing is not a good idea.

Now you & your wife away or you and another couple is a great idea. Did it and it's a great time.

There is just something about the boys extended weeked away golfing & carousing that wives will not comprehend.

Just check out the Skeletons thread and see if your wife would like to be alond durring soem of those events!

My wife thinks you guys are all a bunch of serial killers on the lamb.   ;)

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. (Did I spell that right?)

Sheepishly,

Dan

P.S. My wife doesn't give you guys a second thought -- mostly because I'm careful never to mention any of you!

P.P.S. My daughter, on the other hand, thinks you're all as nutty as I am -- and she would happily attend such a gathering.

Dan - we are pretty darn close in our approach to this.  My wife only thinks you all are serial killers because I had to explain SOMEHOW why the hell I went to Nebraska, Georgia, New York, some of the other crazy (to her) things I have done.  She always is amazed I return alive.

And John F, methinks you have this exactly right also.  Oh good lord would non-golfing wives not comprehend the whys, whats, and hows of a full-blown guys golf trip... thankfully so!

Huck, I hear you about the separate thing issue, but that's what my weekend games are for, and, since my wife is such an avid golfer I have trouble getting away on golf trips without her for the exact opposite reason as it seems you do, my wife always wants to go.

I'll take my issue but then I was actually introduced to her in a game at Southward Ho CC (great less known Tilly course on the South Shore of western Suffolk County) so I knew what I was getting into.

It was just a thought, perhaps we'll do what we did at Cuscowilla, she'll come with me a few days in advance and then fly home and hang with her sisters while I play with the guys.  Oh . . . btw, I'm trying to get in all the great trips I can pre-kids so the next few GCA Outings need to be as good as the last ;D

Cheers.

Jason:

This is all cool - we all have our own issues re this, and yours are different but real none the same!  In any case as I say an outing with the ladies could be great fun, for those with a different life situation than me, that's all.   ;D

David:

Please.  You are talking to America's Guest here and I do get around, on very limited financial means.  How the hell do you think I tend to make these things happen?  My wife is just smart enough though to know that I damn well don't have any business reasons to go to Nebraska or Atlanta or Southern California or Oregon or.....  Unfortunately she does know my job.

I think this is a great idea....what if we all wear masks like in Eyes Wide Shut and then quiz our wives on who she banged....Give me some notice and I'll show you guys what rugged and natural really means...As soon as your wife came back and said the guy was so grateful he cried...you would know she had been Hucked...

Dave's got the right idea on the businesss trip issue.

If my wife only knew how much golf I got in durring my trips.

It's just amazing how many last minute meetings that we have to attend come up. :)

Jason,

My wife and Mrs. Huckaby think along similar lines... this GCA internet chat room is full of, you name it, paedophiles, serial weirdos, lonely old men, guys looking for guys and all that sort of stuff. It wasn't until she met Dave Moriarty and John Bernhardt that she realized she was probably right! :D

My spouse has a swing to die for, but rather spending time on a golf trip with a bunch of reprobates  she would prefer to sip some wine on a holiday in Tuscany.

Jason, I think you should now consider yourself on double secret probation.

You and me both, buthah.

The drag for me is that my job just plain doesn't require me to travel much.  But when I do, the FIRST consideration is always nearby golf.

The recent Cuscowilla trip happened for me ONLY because I could tie it to a NY business trip, make it a triangle... One of the great trips of my life, to Philadelphia and NY in 2001, consisted of 1.5 days of business - in CONNECTICUT - spread into 7 rounds of golf near Phila and on Long Island as well as New Haven...

Oh hell yes, I am on top of this.  Methinks I just need a new job that does require travel.

Well now there is what ought to be the final word.  OH yes, I can just imagine telling my wife that we are going to spend our vacation money hooking up with my wacko golf friends... Methinks she would much prefer summer in Death Valley to such a thing.

Ditto.  Getting harder to hide now that pictures of strange golf courses keeping arising and getting intermixed w/family pics when I download pictures from my digital camera.

If anyone wants to meet up with me and the wife in Hawaii next Feb, that would be fine, but she hasn't golfed since she was pregnant with our first child.  Otherwise, she wouldn't come.

Jason,

3 days of my non-golf wife listening to GCAers would = Mike having to attend about 40 Broadway Musicals next year.

What are you nuts ?  ;)

My wife and I are planning to be at Bandon Aug 1-4 for 4 days of golf. Why don't you and your wife join us there, and any other interested CGA's.

The new course opens June 1st.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Jason,

You, like Spanky, are hereby expelled from the He-Man Woman Haters Club!

One mention of Barney's Fat Dixie Chick thread a few years ago to the Mrs. pretty much guaranteed that she wouldn't be caught dead at a GCA event. I went to great lengths to insure that she was not home when the Hillbilly GYB tour rolled through Nashvegas last month.

As Huck would say, "Audible Yucks" on this one ...

I am, in fact, sitting at my wife's place of employment, in a spare office, with the audible yucks that she yells back at me "What are you laughing at?"

I agree, she doesn't / wouldn't understand, and only the fact that Huckaby is a SCU grad has allowed me to attend the GCA fests ...

In regards to the "Business Trips" excuse, you must set the bar early in your relationship.  I travelled with my golf clubs from the beginning, whether or not golf was likely to be played (yes, even to Denver in the winter months).  If not, when she drops you off at the airport for the "business trip", it's awfully difficult to hide the golf clubs in your normal luggage ;)

jason,

Do Wisconsin and then come across the lake by plane or boat to traverse city & northern mich.. where you can really get in some great golf and have some very good alternative diversions as well..

If your bride needs encouragement, tell her Ms Sheila participated at the 30th Parallel Outing in TX in 2002,  The Land of Enchantment Tour in 2003 and the Go Canada Tour last summer .. and we're considering the next one in Casa de CAmpo She still talks about the Stanley Thompson and Rod Whitman courses we played as highlights of last summer..
and compares them to Kingsley and our michigan haunts and then New Mexico's venues played.. but she'd rather play than talk..

Scott, Hawaii in Feb sound nice, unfortunately we'll be there in June..  turtle bay..

Set the date, pick the state, see what happens

Ben Dewar is setting up an outing at Casa de Campo (La Romana) in the Dominican Republic. Dates are Sunday March 27th thru Thursday March 31st. Thankfully, this is before hurricane season. This is a followup of the Banff/Jasper outing last year.
