US Top 100s under 6500 yds?
« on: October 21, 2004, 07:00:56 AM »
On the thread where I posted the Eastward Ho! pics I asked why this course isn't in any of national magazine US Top 100s.

The only answer offered was because it's only 6200 yds.

A piffling reason.

How many courses in the Top 100 lists are less than 6500 (give or take a few yards)? Which courses are these?

Any others that are possibly descriminated against, for being perceived as too short.

I'm certain Shoreacres (Ill.) is under 6,500 yards, and CC of Fairfield (Conn.) is, too. No discrimination there.

Is there a top 100 in the world that doesn't have a set of man tees under 6,500 yds.....

Wait ten years for this survey, and then they all will be - for nine holes. :D

Paul,

Maidstone.

I believe that Bobby Jones called Montclair the longest short course he ever played.  At under 6,500 yards it plays considerably longer, and is a real test at par 70.

Cypress can't be far away from 6500.

Cypress can't be far away from 6500.

Correct.  But does it meet Paul's standard?  Blue tees are 6509.   ;)

Pasatiempo is 6444 from tips.

Paul said "give or take a few yards."  To me, 9 yards over 18 holes is "a few."  In fact, I'd bet that 99.9% of all rounds form the Blues at CPC are played at more than a few less than 6500, given that most tees on most courses are set up several yards inside the official markers or just about every hole.  No?

One of the beauties of a modern course is that it is designed to play from the 6,500 tees as well as the 7,500 tees....the old courses can't do this as seemlessly because of the very nature of the orginal architects life status.   Stretching a classic course is like trying to make a family room out of your garage...

Good mood, but usual intolerance of misreadings. :)

You said "correct" to my assertion that Cypress "can't be far away from 6500", but asked if it still "met Paul's standard" as it was actually 6509.

I'm in the process of converting one of my garages to an office.  What's that like?  Bringing in Coore and Crenshaw to give a Fazio course some soul, maybe?

Rich, sounds to me like you're in a bad mood. That's OK, can't see many Yankee fans being in good moods right now.

 ;D

All I meant to do was confirm your incredibly good guess at the back tee yardage at Cypress.  Personally my recollection was it was a bit more than that - I was guessing 6600 - and looking it up, well I was impressed at how very very close you came.  Well done.  But of course it's up to Paul as to whether Cypress "counts" for this question, because he did say "less than 6500 yards".  Oh certainly, through tee placement and the like it can certainly qualify, and beyond that, only the hardest of hearts would disinclude it for 9 measly yards.  I am with you on this, brother.

But I've also participated in too many threads with Pat Mucci, thus the question.

Rich,

The term "one of my garages" does not compute in my world...as a matter of fact I don't know anyone with a home office than consists of more than a working toilet in the pole barn.....that is luxury my friend..

No many so far.

The Top 100 US courses must be generally longer that the GB&I.  Even the older courses.  By my estimate 25-30! of the Golf World GB&I Top 100 are about 6500 or less.

Unless of course there are quite a few shorter courses like Eastward Ho! that deserve inclusion.

And yes 6509 does meet my criterion :D

Paul,

Victoria National is a top 100 course and the majority of the membership and their friends play it at under 6,500 yds....does this qualify.

I was only thinking of the back tees.  Which I assume are the yardages listed in the rankings.

Paul,

How many courses in the GB&I are in the US top 100....I think it is hilarious how some people perceive a course or a hole based on a tee that is never played.....

Paul:

Out of those 25-30 courses less than 6500 yards in the UK top 100, how many were built after 1940?

I think in general courses on both sides of the pond are built with yardages appropriate for their times.  Thus we in this younger country don't have many top ones under 6500.  I'd say that's the answer here far more than any discrimination against shorter courses - we just don't plain have nearly as many courses par 70 or over that are that short, from the tips.

I don't know how many GBI courses would make the US Top100

I agree, a course shouldn't be judged unworthy just because it can't be stretched to 6800-7000.
