Americas Best according to Harry Vardon: Mayfield
« on: June 11, 2003, 03:07:48 AM »
Harry Vardon visited most of the prominent courses in America. Between Chicago to the East and all the way up and down the coast. His opinion of the best golf course in America is a little surprising. Any one have a guess?

It was 1900, the year he won the Open at Chicago.  So, I'll give the slug's answer of "Chicago Golf Club."

Apawamis, Onwenstia or Garden City

I don't have a guess, but ...

Wasn't his brother the pro at Onwentsia?

I sure hope that's not the answer -- or we're headed for a heated thread about Historical Bias!

Perhaps this question has arisen because it is particularly timely? Olympia Fields? Otherwise, probably somthing in NY such as Pelham or Engineers?

This was around 1913-14.

Not Chicago, Apawamis, Onwentsia, Garden City, Olympia Fields, Pelham or Engineers.

Maybe the Country Club at Brookline?

Surprising because of his unpleasant loss to Ouimet there in the 1913 U.S. Open?

I know this one, but I can't remember which exact course it was. So I'll take a stab at the three which are coming to mind.

In no paticular order....

1-The Country Club
2-NGLA
3-Merion

Not NGLA, Merion, Brookline, Euclid, Newport, SLCC or Shadow Creek. This course is alive and well. One of the best routings I have run across -- and one of the more unique.

What is SLCC?

Tom,

I believe SPDB has SLCC as St. Louis Country Club. Which is currently under siege due to downpours prior to our Member-Guest that begins Thursday.
