In the St. Louis area, we have a number of courses designed by Gary Kern - Aberdeen, Eagle Knoll, Bent Creek.  The ones I have played are by and large pretty good.

Another name that I should have thought of before from here in the SE is Denis Griffiths.  He has done a number of courses in the Atlanta area (Chateau Elan, for instance) and others around the state.  Always enjoyable to play, and playable for all levels.

One of the "hidden gems" in GA would have to be Georgia Veterans' Park in Cordele (near Callaway Gardens), an excellent state-owned track by Griffiths that you can walk for around $25.

I'll see Bill Bergin at church in a few minutes, and I'll be sure to tell him that you said great things about Woodfin Ridge.

AG - Did Bill have anything to say about Woodfin Ridge?  ;)

You mentioned that DeVictor has worked with Steve Melnyk. Now that you mention it, I remember that when Clemson's course was being built Melnyk's name was included in the course's promotional materials. I don't know what happened, but the Melnyk connection just seemed to fade away a very short time after the couse opened. Now there is no mention of Melnick (or DeVictor for that matter) anywhere around the course. Weird?!?!

Remind me... Did you play The Walker Course last year on your trip home from the beach?

I didn't see Bill Sunday after all; I'm sure I will soon, and I'll pass along the kind words.

I did not play the Walker Course.  I went to Cateechee instead on my way home from Clemson, but when I came back on Sunday to pick up my daughter, I went by the course and looked around.  Looked great from what I could see, and maybe someday...

AG - I'm not sure if you are a Clemson football fan, or if you are planning to visit Clemson much during football season, but the BEST time to play The Walker Course is DURING an afternoon football game! If the game has a 1:00 kickoff you get a 1:30 tee time and have the course all to yourself. We do this a couple of times each year (depending on the schedule) and throughly enjoy our day. You can hear the fans cheering in the stadium when something big happens. By the time you finish your round and post-match beverages the game is over and the fans have gone home... no traffic problems whatsoever. Let me know if you are ever interested in getting up a game on a football Saturday... you can play golf while your daughter is enjoying football with her friends, then hook up with her for dinner immediately following. Win/Win!!

Michael,
Actually, as a UNC grad, football is something I don't like to talk about right now!
Great idea about playing during game times, but not likely right now.  My daughter is a HS junior who was going to Clemson for a volleyball camp last summer (NOT beach volleyball, so don't start THAT again :)).  Other than that and bringing a couple of my basketball teams there for camp when I was still coaching HS basketball, I've never set foot in Clemson.
Now, if she ends up at Clemson after next year, the idea would work, except I'll be too poor from out of state tuition to pay greens fees!  Can I sneak on?

AG - OK, it's all coming back to me now! I forgot about the volleyball camp... I was thinking you had moved her into a dorm.

Well, The Walker Course is worth a look. If the urge (or opportunity) strikes you at some point let me know and we'll call the pro Brent Jesup and see if he will let you sneak on... he's a UNC grad, too!!!
