It's official
« on: April 02, 2004, 01:46:26 PM »
I was compelled by the client to wait until today to officially confirm this, but the rumor is true:  Jack Nicklaus and I are going to co-design the Sebonack Golf Club on the Bayberry property next door to The National Golf Links of America.  We are hoping to start on the construction early this summer.

This collaboration will only work well if everyone involved remembers to put the project first, instead of worrying about "who did what."  Consequently, I'm not going to have much to say about the latter subject during the course of this project, or afterwards.  For now, here's what I've had to say as part of the press release:

It’s hard to imagine a project bigger than this one.  We’re starting with the kind of property every architect dreams about, with perfect sandy soil and a lot of frontage along the bay.  Creating a great golf course is the first and only priority.  It is an honor to be working alongside Jack Nicklaus, and I’m sure I will learn a lot from picking the brain of the greatest golfer ever.  And if we’re ever short of inspiration, we can peek across the fence at two of the best golf courses ever built.  I can’t wait to get started!

Tom

Congratulations and welcome to the neighborhood.

Has your ideal routing and use of the property been approved by the town and environmental agencies?

What is the mandate you and Jack have from the owners?

Anyone but me very glad Tom posted this today, and not yesterday?

 ;)

This is very cool and wow, what a golf course may result... greatest player ever combines with one of the greatest living architects, on a piece of land that has to be among the best available, for so many reasons....

Will it be possible to live up to the expectations?

I have a feeling they'll find a way.

Congatulations Tom. It should be an interesting experience for you. And Jack too.

Is this course public or private? ( If I could insert one of those smile things, I'd put it here!)

Congratulations on the project Tom.  We all can not wait to see the results.

It will be very interesting to see how Jack's and Tom's style mesh.  Most of Jack's courses are of the "championship" length and style while Tom tends to favor the classic, character filled courses that focus on the details.

It will be interesting to see if what results is a 7200 yard course or a 6800 yard course.

Awesome, Tom!!  ;D

Congratulations are certainly in order, and I have the sense that you two will find more in common than others might imagine.

I also know you'll stick to your guns when you disagree so it should be an intriguing pairing.

Congratulations.

Several years ago I asked on GCA if Pacific Dunes was going to be your legacy course?  I'm the first to admit that it appears not and I am sure Sebonak will be one of your finest creations.

Great News! I have several guys who've been asking me about possible memberships and I now can unequivocally recommend Sebonac! Hope the force stays with you and the result bears the fruit the land deserves.

Whose crews will do what?  Anotherwords, is your on-site construction team going to do the actual work?  (Urbina, Hepner, Placek, Slawnik, Schneider, Iverson and others who have worked individual situations with you).  Or, is there a blend of Golden Bear's-Paragon staff and yours?

While I may be called a Maytag Man, I think you all see where I'm going with this... ::) :-X

Just to add for clarity of intentions, I believe your guys can learn much from Jack's memory bank of historic shot challenges played at the greatest courses around the world and under the most thrilling circumstances over 45+ years.  I don't go lightly on what he may impart as to the vision thing.  But, I also have to think that your team should be the ones to shape and create the translation of what Jack can offer in experience of golf shot value-playability.

Most assuredly I would never abandon a Budweiser.  Having never set foot on Long Island, I will however back up a Bud truck to your front door if and when I do!

Tom Doak,

Congratulations.  Pace yourself, young man.

Ditto most everything said Mr. Doak.  Jack Nicklaus has class, and not that you are lacking anything in this department, but his image can only be helpful to you and the project.  I do suspect that the two of you will get along very well and learn from each other.  If you don't mind me saying, you are one very fortunate fellow.  Best of luck.

P.S.- will Jim Urbina be involved?

i don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but something doesn't seem right. what kind of course are you really going to get with architects that are at opposite ends of the spectrum. it appears that significant compromises will have to be made for this course to come to fruition. i sure hope someone isn't selling themselves to the devil in order to work on this piece of property. stay true to the things that got you where you are. keep the renaissance alive.

Tom,

Obviously you cannot answer many of the "You or Jack" questions, so I have a suggestion.  Lot's of public entities put in private suggestions for those in the know.  Given Jack's love of the high fade, see if the land allows for the 1st hole to be a slight dogleg left.  If it is, we will know who dominated the design.
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Tom,
Congratulations on landing another great property to work your magic on. I am curious as to what the mandate from the owner is. Does he want a "championship" course, a fun members course, or what? What other existing courses have come up in conversation with the owner that he likes and would like emulated in what you will be doing?
I think this collaboration will be a good thing for Nicklaus in his evolution as an architect, unfortunately it won't make you a champion golfer ;). Nicklaus seems to be moving in the right direction with some of his more recent projects (ie Mayacama and Ocean Hammock).
I hope I can have a chance to stop by to see you at work at some point.
    Good luck. :)
