Andy - I am not doubting you, far from it - I am just professing my ignorance.

And Bill, dammit, you just made this far far more difficult.  What, you want me to get in shape?

For the Philly trio with Huntingdon Valley - you'd actually be able to play 63 holes with the last nine (HVCC's C-Nine) being your toughest all day.

The interesting thing about a Philly area trio is how much of a swing vote the 3rd course would be. Pine Valley and Merion are a given, but the third depends on taste since you'd be making a compromise amongst many Philly area clubs.

For kicks and flavor - I'd do Pine Valley, Merion and JEFFERSONVILLE!

Another trio:
Bethpage Black
Bethpage Red
Bethpage Green OR Yellow OR Eisenhower Red.

Kyle - is it the C-Seven?

Check that math.

I never liked the 6th or 7th  ;)

It's fixed, by the way.  :P

Yes: Cruden Bay  Murcar  Royal Aberdeen
Turnberry Troon Prestwick (or substitute Western Gailes)

No:  The Judge The Legislator The Senator at Capitol Hill,     Alabama

PS A little OT but anyway--one of the best days of my golfing life was 72 holes (walking) as a 12 year old on the 9 holer I grew up playing.

Tim,

Substitute The Island for one of the latter two and you got a deal...

Any rankings of the sets that I suggested?
Here's how I'd put them:
2. Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, Spyglass (that is if youlet me subsitute one of the MPCC courses, both of which I think are superior to Spyglass).

Tom and Jerry(is that great or what),

That combination is what I dream about, with Spyglass, although I have never played MPCC from what I have seen, it doesn't compare to Spyglass. I can't dream it gets any better anywhere in the world at such a close distance.

Tim,

I am afraid that you have been brainwashed. The opening holes at the Hill are exciting and scenic, thereafter you can forget about being on the Peninsula. You could be on any well treed course.

Either of the courses at MPCC offer a better round. The Shore from the first hole and the Dunes from the fourth. I could make up a composite that would knock your socks off.

I think someone mentioned the courses around Columbus, Ohio including Muirfield, Double Eagle, The Golf Club and Scioto - any combination of the 3 would be awesome.

In my opinion you have to include NGLA in any dream trip to Eastern Long Island.

Bend, OR - Crosswater, Pronghorn, Broken Top

Top three within 100 miles that would take 3 days- Machrie,
Machrihanish, Royal County Down

1. Long Island
2. Monterey
3. Sandbelt

I played 72 at Gleneagles. Kings, Queens, Kings and then Kings. I would just sub in the Monarchs or the Centenary (Ryder Cup). Are these the same course or is the Centenary new?

As much as I want to play CPC a perfect golf day for me would not include any of the lists mentioned.

First, I would start waaaaay early and play Royal Melbourne in Australia.  Then I would fly over and play TOC.  Then another flight and NGLA and SH.  Perfect.

If I did not have that oppurtunity and the courses had to be close I would choose Maidstone, SH, and NGLA.  A very very close second would be Spyglass, then CPC, and Pebble as a finisher.

I have always thought of Spyglass as a combination of Olympic and Cypress Point. It doesn't get any better. Again I have not played MPCC but the holes I have seen near the ocean just don't compare to Spyglass and the inland holes I have seen from the roads driving around don't have the feel of the inland holes at Spyglass.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Jordan, it will take you at least 28 hours to get from RMGC to TOC (possibly more), and you only get ten of those hours back.  Your plan simply cannot be done.  I defy you to get in rounds in the firs two, let alone a third anywhere.  Don't forget, also, that you'll be jetlagged out of your mind when you arrive in Scotland.

Having played Spyglass and having played MPCC Dunes (not the Shore) I would rather include MPCC as the third leg instead of Spyglass.  How you can say that MPCC doesn't compare is beyond me.

Tim,

Take Spyglass's par threes, please. The third is an okay drop down short iron with a pleasing ocean view over a bunch of houses. The fifth, a demanding long iron from the back. The twelth a good mid iron with water on the left, not too much difficulty here, the fifteenth another drop down wedge, pretty easy.

Go to the Dunes. The fourth a superb Biarritz of 238 yards with a stream to the left and a forest to the right. The seventh a delightful long iron from the back across a deep depression and well bunkered. The tenth, picked out by Raynor and completed by Hunter/ MacKenzie, one of the great vistas in golf and a tiny green and then, the piece de resistance, the fourteenth. From the back, 177 to 189  yards across rocks and ocean to a green perched on the edge of the world. I am afraid Spyglass cannot compare.

We could then go on to discuss the five par threes on the Shore but that would just be a sadistic overkill.

Ryan - it's ok - as you know I'm a nothing fan as of last night.

 :'(

Wayne - sounds good to me making that Philadelphia replacement, but that still doesn't get it to #2 for me.  I am rather a homer though.

TH

I can appreciate that... me too.  although I'd definitely give my "East Coast" home a slight edge.

Of all the lists mentioned I'd have to take Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, and Spyglass Hill. That'd be one day I sure wouldn't second guess.

Ones I don't think have been mentioned for a midwestern flavor:

Crystal Downs, Kingsley Club, Arcadia Bluffs
Crooked Stick, Wolf Run, any number of other Indy courses
Blackwolf Run (both) and Whistling Straits (skip the Irish though!)
Point O'Woods, Lost Dunes, Dunes Club

If you were in Wales: Pyle and Kenfig, Royal Porthcawl, and Southerndown.

My first links courses were P&K and Porthcawl -- on the same day, which ended with a Pimm's on the deck at Porthcawl. Wow, what an introduction to links golf that was.
