this week's top 10 (based upon fun places to play) are:

Merion
Fishers Island
Yale
Pine Valley
Pacific Dunes
Cypress Point
Chicago Golf Club
Royal County Down
Sunningdale Old
Myopia Hunt Club / Atlantic City  / Shinnecock (tie)

bottom line - imho - once one gets to the top 20 or 30  it is a crapshoot to choose a top 10 - too many great ones

I'd be real interested to hear Ran's top 10.  Same with Doak and the other working architects.  Any chance, fellows?

(Feel free to include or exempt your own courses as you wish.)

A completely different take as they come to me one by one

Top 10 I'd most like to go back and play again right now

1-NGLA - pretty much always in that spot
2-The Old Course
3-HCEG
4-Piping Rock
5-Chicago Golf
6-Royal Dornoch
7-Fisher's Island
8-Carnegie Abbey
9-Royal Aberdeen
10-The Preserve

seems like they are mostly near the water....

Any new additions Dr. Redanman?

 Sean,

I find your ranking of Lahinch above Ballybunion, Portrush, and Royal County Down fascinating. Can you provide more enlightenment on that opinion? I guess I will add Enniscrone to my next trip.

Huck:

You hit it on the head, I need to retire someday and one round at Pebble is like 1 year of work when you future dollar value it.

BTW, I payed 3 rounds at Pebble on our honeymoon, so since we're repeating our honeymoon for our 10 yr. anniversary I'll play it at least 3 more times.  The real catch is going to be getting upgraded to the Still Water Cove suite again (man was that the nicest room I've ever stayed in!).

Really this is an unfair question!  How to limit it to 10 and why are they chosen?  Mine are based on fun, memories, things to see and learn, but mainly FUN.  And I cheat a little by adding the last item.  ;D  I can substitute in one course at a time, can't I?   ;)

Crystal Downs
Lawsonia Links
Sand Hills
Cypress Point
Old Course
Royal Dornoch
North Berwick
Prestwick
Cruden Bay
. . .
"any course I have worked on"

I chose a dozen courses to receive perfect "10" marks in The Confidential Guide, and though some have seen changes over the years, I am not moved to change my grades at this time.  They were:

St. Andrews Old Course
Royal Dornoch
Muirfield
Ballybunion (Old)
Royal Melbourne (West)
Pine Valley
Merion (East)
National Golf Links
Shinnecock Hills
Pinehurst No. 2
Crystal Downs
Cypress Point

That was before Sand Hills and Pacific Dunes were opened for play.  They'd be close to this list.

However, in general I agree with whoever said that there are 30-40 courses at the top and splitting hairs is no more than that.
