It was Tom Doak in a Q and A for PNW Golfer. The rest of the quote was "At Pacific Dunes that's the use of the coastline and how often we get back to it.  At Tumble Creek its the view up the Cle Elum River Valley."

Well, if he used it inside quotation marks -- indicating an ironic distance from the word -- we may be "willing" to give him a "pass."

Not Graves.

Although he has done courses far and wide, he has done some of his best work in the PNW.

Furry Creek?  :o ::)

Sorry Bill,

Since the answer to the question was Tom Doak, I, perhaps confusingly, shifted gears and gave a hint as to the answer. The best work in the PNW would be Pacific Dunes of course.

Actually, I would prefer Tom go back to saying I build golf courses, not signatures. I am not in favor of his answer here.

Garland,

I dont understand the generalization of Mr. Doak based on his one answer.

If you were to think about every Tom Doak course, I bet you would be very hard pressed to find even one course that is defined by a 'signature' hole.  Obviously, there are some features on his sites that might stand out a lot (he gave two examples) and might make the course that much better by having holes use which those features.  But, it is a given fact, that sometimes there are certain features on a site that are better suited for golf holes than others.

I dont see the big deal about what he said.  Quite frankly, I understand it and dont see why there had to be an entire thread discussing it.  The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of the golfing public uses signature holes or features to define golf courses.  It just seems to me that Tom was trying to address the question in terms of the golfing public.

No big deal.

Jordan,

I think that is the next incarnation of this thread title(and would be appropriate, finally), since Garland keeps changing things.... :)

Garland:

I don't like using the word "signature" at all but at least I didn't use the same answer as everybody else to that question.  If you read the whole Q & A, it sounds like we're all pretty much the same; that's the down side of not getting the people together but just interviewing them individually.  A forum like this is better for that sort of article.

New thread title by popular demand.

Don't know what got Jordan in a tizzy. Maybe he got upset at me for exposing his proclivity to make multiple shoe changes during a round.
