Mike,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. One of these days our paths will cross on a fairway somewhere. :)

I agree #6 is a great green complex.  I had a 7 iron in...thought I hit the perfect club and flew the green.....I got aggressive and paid for hit being a foot from the hazard.  Having to work the ball should be rewarded...if you can't, hit short and punch/putt up the gut of the green.  Cirba actually had the best angle into that green...from #7 fairway...too bad it was a 225+ yard shot!

I liked #9 also....loved the hidden bunkers on the hill down to the green......unless you can really hit it, it just doesn't pay to hit a big club...I think I hit 3 iron, wedge to 20 feet.  A unique hole which could be attacked with the right drive (a power fade that goes 290+)

Not sure what you can do with #7...it basically needs to cover the ground to get from #6 to #8....if you put the green up on the left, it leaves a big walk to #7 tee.....not a really tough hole unless you go in the hazard on the right (as I did on my drive!)

I am hoping to make it down there tomorrow....Long Shadow has been added to Last Minute Tee Times.

Mike C's,
funny but #7 is my favorite......the back right corner s my favorite pin on the course.....the hole is meant to be played from 470 if you play the 410 tee you can hit driver into a tight landing area with wetland right...

#6 was meant to be around 340 yds but the owner loves length and saw where we had room for another 110 yards so we have more tees which I had hoped to hide or eliminate.....I don't intend to change the green but I do feel it is 3 iron/sand wedge or driver on or flip......IMHO much more is to penal....

#9 just needs another tee 30 yds back and to the left so that pulling out driver is an option...now it would be a trick shot and I don't want that.

Mike,

Wouldn't touch #6.

#9 could maybe use some work.  The obvious shortcoming is that the tee shot is a bit of a throw-away, but the approach and green/surrounds tend to make up for it.  Not sure what you do.

Maybe you could answer this:  other than eye candy, why the bunkers on the inside of the hill facing the green? (#9)

It's interesting seeing Cuscowilla being brought into the mix.  Cuscowilla, by comparison to Long Shadow, seems to want to say "I am a monument,"  whereas Long Shadow wants to be a very fine golf course unburdened by pretensions.  Long Shadow has more zip.

Sean,

Same hole:

I think you may have expressed an opinion on this green placement in a thread some months back

Mike mentioned #7 as his favorite, especially with the back right pin placement:

Thanks Gary...go ahead and prove me wrong about the 7th green!   ::) :P ;) ;D

But folks...if you think that looks good, you should see the hillside up on the right hand side of the picture.

I swear you can build an amazing "gravity golf" hole there (think 15 at Bethpage)  that avoids messing with that bane of modern golf, the "environmentally protected area", almost entirely.

Now, if I can only get Mike to listen to me.

Can I get a "hallelujah" to the idea of an alternate green, at the very least??   ;D

Why don't you join us in October and try to state your case in front of the group?

I'm really looking forward to this trip.  More pictures and commentary please!

A brief prelude.  These photos were shot last February or March, before the back 9 was open.  I was there early and woefully underdressed;  froze my butt off but prevailed upon head pro Ed Hoard to make me some really awful coffee that nonetheless stopped my jaw from clacking.

#17, Mike's massive punchbowl green, will have to remain a mystery as my 3rd set of camera batteries blew out in time to miss it.

#1 tee

#2 green.  photo doesn't do much.  very tough to get a decent angle on this difficult skyline green

#3

from behind #4 green.  very challenging par 3

Several shots of the spectacular #5, beginning somewhere in front of the forward tees.  Par 5

#6 green.  again, doesn't look like much but it's actually quite interesting.  you can bounce an approach off the knob front left (not really visible, but use your imagination) to get to this pin placement.  back left would appear to be quite difficult.  there's a menacing ditch behind the green.

#7 green as seen in earlier post

#8 green.  Par 3

#9 green.  very delicate downhill approach with all kinds of problems when you miss

#10 i can't wait to play this hole

#12

#13

3 shots of #14, another hole i'm really looking forward to playing

Not having played it, I believe #15 may be driveable:

2 shots of the potentially tragic #16 (punchbowl green at #17 in the background of second photo)

these are 2 angles on the green at the par 5 #18.  another hole that seems as though it could be really special

this is behind the green:

this is off to the right;

what the heck.. here's my daughter, Ava, and her pet parakeet "Ozzie."

Mike Young,

What course(s) inspired you to employ this type of bunker style at Long Shadow? They're quite bomb-crater-like....

Gary,

I've been to the course on a couple of occasions and didn't remember #2 as a "skyline green".

I thought there were considerable tree plantings behind the green?  From the angle of the picture it of course shows a lot of sky but I think the design of the hole is not exactly best described as "sky line".  In a few years it will be "framed" by the trees I think are visible already.

My memory may be off and the young trees visible in the picture may be farther behind the green than I remembered.

Mike, was this a skyline green or just a "temporary skyline" until the trees grow up??

Of course, I could have my holes mixed up and #2 may be a completely different hole ;D

As to the bunker style I am not a huge fan of bunkers that are "eyebrows" that hide all the sand.  (Think old Standard Club in Atlanta--new bunkering is much better than the original Arthur Hills stuff).

Of course, Mike does a nice job of "mixing it up" and some bunkers show sand, some don't and its a nice variety--I just prefer the other looks to the "eyebrow".

The only other comment is that the two par threes--the second one on the front over tall grass is a little moundy for me and the round eyebrows make that par 3 and the first par 3 on the back that goes over the lake look very similar.  Both are forced carrys over water or tall grass to greens kinda symmetrically surrounded by the "eyebrow bunkers".

I really like the downhill par 3 4th and the punchbowl 17th. ;)

Chris,

If you've got a good definition of "skyline green" please share.  I may have used the term casually, (#2) but I don't recall any trees around or near that green at all.  Whatever it is or isn't it's very interesting.  I had a chip from the right side roll back to me.
