Tom,

I figured you were in on the Maderas round at KPI.  Oh, well.  (Thought I remember you mentioning having played Sea Ranch.)

Originally, I though maybe Claremont was too obscure for you to care to try to play.

Sea Ranch is one of my faves - I have played there more than just about anyone I know. Love it.

And yep, I missed the outing at Maderas.  'Twas a sad day indeed... Have yet to correct this omission - sadly I don't get down to the San Diego area all that often and when I do, family stuff tends to obliterate golf opportunities.

Claremont too obscure?  Hell NO course is too obscure for the golf addict, ESPECIALLY not one where work colleagues are members and where charity tourneys regularly occur...  Oh man, if you could see the course I play regularly, you'd laugh at the thought of me considering any course not worth my time, especially a damn good unique old course like that.  ;D

Paging Ran Morrissett! Ran, please import this thread into the permanent archives of GCA.com shown to the left. It's too damn important and interesting and reflects too much work to disappear in the wake of the thousands of GCA.com threads to follow.

Well done Scott, and thanks.

Happy Holidays,

Scott,

Thanks for putting this together.  It will be a valuable resource for all of us.  I've already gone through about 20 of the courses since you posted!

Hope everyone has a happy & safe holiday.

Many thanks Scott.  I'm going to nominate the AOTDs as the most informative series of threads we have on GCA, especially for people like me who count the number of AOTDs that we've played (8 for me, but I'll hit double digits next year) rather than the number that we haven't.

Congratulations, again, Scott.

I've copied many to a file, but I'll have to copy them all to burn a CD.

BTW, I've played 111, so far.....

While I knew few of these courses, I looked forward to this thread everyday. Scott, you should be commended for you hard work and effort you put into the posts (especially the clues!!!).

While the topic will be missed the permanent library will be top notch.

Scott, thanks again and happy holidays. This thread will be one of my favorite gifts this year!!

Thanks for all the time and effort you put forth in contributing the AOTD to the site.

It was most helpful and very much appreciated by everyone.

Scott,

When you view the final summary listing, the breadth and scope of this body of work is mind-boggling.  I thought about a way to pay you a proper compliment, and it came to me that it would be best to do it using architect themes....

The breadth and volume of the work was widespread, ala Donald Ross.  While it did require the manufacturing of the images and there was some replication, ala CB MacDonald, the originality and impact on the site will be recognized for years to come.  Your use of the landscape provided you was McKenzie-esque, and the variation and willingness to take chances with hints would make Strantz proud.

Well done.  A picture is worth a thousand words, but your pictures have generated great thoughts among a thousand GCA enthusiasts.

Dittos to the above sentiments.

We all really appreciate all the time and effort.

Now I am going to have to sit down and evaluate how many I have played as well. Tom has motivated me.  Just not enough to do it yet tonight.

Sometime though.

I agree w/ Ran addding it as a permanent feature to the left menu bar.
AOTD has been a premiere feature of GCA.

Scott - thank you so much for giving us this great resource. Wonderful job - we all do appreciate it.

This is what this site is about

Thanks for all the kind words everyone!

I personally noticed Dunes Club in Michigan incorrectly placed
in SC, so I placed it in the right state and changed the
numbers in the first post.

Tom H,

I've played 12 of the 45 in CA, the most of any state for me,
a NC resident!  That's 4 more than the 8 I've played in NC.
(wonder if you'd care to guess those 12?).

My total number of AOTD courses played is 54 in 12 states
(and just 1 country  :P).

Scott,

I wont hazard to guess your 12 in CA, I will let Huck do that, but I will take a shot at the 8 in NC on your list.

My guess is:
Southern Pines
Tobacco Road
Wake Forest
Pine Needles
Mid Pines
Pinehurst #2
Pinehurst #4
Pinehurst #7

Am I close?

Not suprisingly my highest state was my home state of SC with 17/17.  Although percentage wise it was tied with my original home state of SD, as well as AL, KY, MS, NE, and WY where I also played 100% of those listed.  Not saying much since they were nearly all 1/1.

It is again the right time of year to look back on things like this, because it gives you pause to thank God for all the blessings in your life.  And I do feel blessed to be able to travel and play the golf that I get to.  I have been able to play 130 of the AOTD courses in 36 states and 1 country also.  (does Canada count as a seperate country anymore?)

OK, completely off the top of my head, here's my guess for the 12 that Scott has played in this, the greatest state in the Union:

CA   17 Riviera   link
CA   29 Olympic (Lake)   link
CA   59 Cypress Point   link
CA   95 Pasatiempo   link
CA   131 Los Angeles (North)   link
CA   185 Spyglass Hill   link
CA   213 Links at Spanish Bay   link
CA   221 Olympic (Ocean)   link
CA   254 Monterey Peninsula (Dunes)   link
CA   358 Rustic Canyon   link
CA   367 Lake Merced   link

It is funny, I was pretty sure that you had played Old Town, but then I would have had to take off one of the three Pinehurst courses, and I just couldnt decide which one to throw out.  So I went with all three.

Scott:

Damn!  I would have gotten 11 out of 12 if I had stuck with my gut instinct... I had Maderas and Barona in and replaced them with Spy and SB at the last second... oh foolish me!

Your list is pretty damn good, in any case... you'd have to be in the top 5% of all golfers in the state in terms of playing our best courses...  ;D

Turboe,

I've played something like 17 or 18 courses in the Pinehurst
area, but only 1 at PCC, #2.  PCC is too expensive, and since
I live not too far away, the "I'm travelling, I may never get
another chance to play" rationale/urgency isn't there.
