Yale

New Haven Country Club (very cool course)

Fairfield (I know it's a bit of a drive, but I couldn't think of another course in the New Haven vicinity and it gives you a double dose of Raynor)

Columbus, you could do 54 with all the sets. Dayton,OH- NCR North and South and Moraine could be done real easily and Cincinnati- Kenwood, Coldstream and Camargo.

How about the Town of Troon aka the Troon Muni's, Lochgreen, Darley and Fullarton ...

You wouldn't even have to leave the parking lot and you could grab a pint in between.

Any rankings of the sets that I suggested?

Here's how I'd put them:

1. Shinnecock, Maidstone, NGLA

2. Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, Spyglass (that is if youlet me subsitute one of the MPCC courses, both of which I think are superior to Spyglass).

3. Pine Valley, Merion, Huntington Valley

4. 3 Courses at Bandon

5. Sand Hills, Dismal River, Wild Horse
(only this low because DR is unproven and I'm not sure it really can be done given the long distances between them)

6. Plainfield, Baltusrol, Somerset Hills

I also think a few mentioned would jump in here... several of the Scotland trifectas...

take out Huntington Valley and put in Aronimink for the Phila. 3-some.  And if you don't want to leave the bridge - hell, if you don't want to leave Delaware County - make it Merion, Aronimink, and Rolling Green.

Ryan - it's ok - as you know I'm a nothing fan as of last night.

Wayne - sounds good to me making that Philadelphia replacement, but that still doesn't get it to #2 for me.  I am rather a homer though.

Jason, I was thinking along those lines, but have never seen Chevy Chase. Would you include it with the other two? It always seems to get compared poorly to Columbia (though that is admittedly a tough comparison!)

The Matt Ward Trifecta of Pocono Classics:
1. Glenbrook
2. Water Gap
3. Shawnee

To Huckaby's rankings, the Poconos say 'Bring it on!!'

Tom and Jerry(is that great or what),

That combination is what I dream about, with Spyglass, although I have never played MPCC from what I have seen, it doesn't compare to Spyglass. I can't dream it gets any better anywhere in the world at such a close distance. Although Tom's combo of Olympic, SFCC and Lake Merced is great.
I'd like to add Torrey Pines North, South, and La Jolla CC. That combo couldn't be beat for year round weather
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Tim:  I love Spyglass.  I've just been very, very fortunate to play each MPCC course quite a few times.  The more I play them, the greater they get in my mind.  I truly do believe each is better on the whole than Spyglass.  BUT... it is very close, and I sure wouldn't argue this too strenuously.   ;)  And great call re the San Diego trio.

Andy:  I know nothing of the Poconos.  But man Jerry's list offers some darn tough competition.   ;)

bakerg:  throw in Dr. Gene Greco as the escort, and I can think of no great day of golf than what you listed.

Tom,

I played all three courses at the Homestead in this order.

Lower Cascades
Cascades
Old Course

The last 9 on the Old Course was a total waste..
I was spent, it was getting dark and the rain was moving in..

I did all 54 at greenbriar one day a couple years ago.  I think it was $300 green fee for all the holes you can play, so it made sense to do so.

Thought of another one, that I happened to get in 45 myself, that is Kapalua-Plantation, Village and Bay courses, I ran out of daylight on the Bay but got in the best holes on the course anyway.

Coolness.
And oh yes, I am a BIG fan of Black Mesa.  Got to play there twice in a very fun GCA-related event a few years ago and I left wanting to play more.  A 54 hole day there would suit me just fine, oh yes it would.

Fossil Trace, Pradera, Red Hawk Ridge

Jay,

The sight of Red Hawk Ridge among all these great courses was visually jarring to me.  I've vowed never to play it again (actually I've made that vow twice, violating my first vow and seriously regretting it).  I'd give it about a Doak 3-4, at best.  Do you really like it and, if so, why?  Sorry, I know this is a feel-good kind of thread, but I have to ask.

Tom, yeah sure, if you are restricting yourself to architectural merit and quality perhaps.  But the Poconos offers something a little more, uhh, unique  ;)

And if you let me go back enough decades, we have a PGA and a number of Eastern Opens amongst that group!
