Piping Rock is a very cool looking courses, and the greens look brutal.  The redan bunker is one of the deepest I have ever seen in my life.  12 feet is no bargain.

What I really like about Piping Rock is the diverse holes and looks that the course provides. A little Shinnecock, a little Pine Valley, a little Garden City and Westchester. The Short, Biarittz and Redan all had their own unique style at Piping Rock.

I can see where some people may not like this diversity, and believe that a course needs to stick to one or two themes.

Peter Herreid can you post a few of your georgeous pics?

Not to diminish the contributions of Doak and Dye but much of the current excellence at Piping Rock is owed to Rick Spear, green superintendent.  He is a very strong player and "gets it"  He realy strengthened PR's Road hole and maintains the course superbly.

JG:  Richard Spear is an excellent superintendent, an excellent golfer, and a friend of mine, too.  And he's done great things there ... he took over at Piping Rock the spring after we had done our work, with a lot of unfinished construction work to grow in, and he just went out and did it.

He has added a couple of tees at Piping, including the long one on #4.  But the back tee at the Road hole was Pete Dye's idea.  Originally we just put back markers in the polo field instead of building anything there, Richard did build the tee but pretty much as Pete had suggested.

Mike S:  We actually lopped off a portion of the green at the Short hole (17th) and also dug that really deep front bunker; it was much shallower originally.  Piping Rock was not a restoration, but Pete Dye's input on a Macdonald course.
