How cool is it that a guy called 'Se(a)ward' is here discussing Se(a)walls... in Monterey!!

Cool!

FBD.

It is cool.

He's a cool guy too.

Has a GREAT job too.  That is, when he doesn't have to corral rogue course raters.

Too bad he didn't build that sea wall.

Then we could give it a nickname: "Seward's Folly."

And Kelly, it's now your ass as well if this is a waste.

Oh, it's not a waste.

If, having read it, you pronounce it a waste, I will buy it from you -- and sentence you to a lifetime of reading John Grisham.

Brian Gracely asked me to look at the 18th fairway's sea wall from 17 Mile Drive. Brian, to do that I would need x-ray vision, too many houses in the way.

What is interesting, I called the shop and received the assurances that absolutely nothing is awry except for the usual rain caused runnels. Then I saw Scott's post and it reminded me of the Tahoe ski reports, "Oh yes we have ten feet of packed powder" only to get there and you are gliding over a rock pile.

Now re this damage, if it is true - and I remain yet to be convinced - it would be very scary because we really haven't had THAT bad of storms yet this winter... particularly not recently...

TH -

We have actually had some high tides when some of these storms have hit, coupled with the storms coming more from the south (which is the bigger impact to the LA basin) and the waves/tidal action hasn't hit the Bay Area proper and hence, not in the news ...

The surf spots that I monitor have been hoping the past month or so ...

Ps:  Now that we have talked traffic patterns and weather reports, I throw it back to Huck for a business report, Huck, how is THE Clorox Company doing today?

Page 2 of the Sports Section of the SF Chronicle has a picture of the damage on #18 at Pebble. A course employee is quoted as saying the damage is "insignificant."

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat has an article today (1/13/05) about the damage at Pebble. You can pull it up online (including a color photo) at:

Click thru to 'Sports' and scroll down for the headline "Pebble Beach's famous 18th gets tighter."  Sorry, I am too lazy to post a direct link.

The PD photographer whose picture is on the PD home page, Kent Porter, is the answer to a extraordinarily obscure PGA Tour trivia question. Can anyone give me the question?

AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, 2003 (courtesy of www.pgatour.com):

In a tournament known for dramatic final-round comebacks -- particularly in the last three years, when Tiger Woods, Matt Gogel and Love all rallied to win on the last day -- Love became the first 54-hole leader to hold on since Brett Ogle in 1993.

Love got his biggest break at the par-3 12th, where his tee shot took a serendipitous bounce off greenside photographer Kent Porter. Love tossed the ball to Porter as a keepsake.

"If we hit somebody on the head, we give them the ball," Love said with a grin. "If felt like if you hit a guy in the foot and it comes back on a green and you make a birdie, he at least deserves the ball -- maybe more."

--------------

Love was unraveling. He was DEAD in the high grass back of 12 when this doofus sitting too close to the green didn't get out of the way.

So the correct question is: Who was the doofus who let Davis Love win at Pebble Beach in 2003?

If the 290 yard mark, is correct, it really should not be too consequential. Most balls hit on that line, need a little help from some well placed rocks, to get that deserved kick back out into the fairway, anyway.

It looks like you can see the chunk that fell in from that Pebble Beach live-cam.  Basically draw a straight line (right) from the short tree in the fariway to the edge of the cliff.  Looks like you can see some of the ground in the water.

btw - Is nobody playing at PBGL today?  I've been checking back periodically and nobody seems to be out there today.

BG - I saw that too.  But they way they were talking earlier about the retaining wall, I thought they meant the big artificial wall extending onward from the beginning of the bunker to the green... if THAT fell in, that's a big story.  What's happened today seems to me of the dog bites man variety.

As for playing PBGL, look at it this way:  would YOU pay $395, no rain checks, the way the weather has been lately?  Yesterday was very nice, today it's overcast.. it's been off and on rain for a long time... no huge storms, as I say, but big chance of rain.

I'm surprised they have as much play as they do today.

Thanks Scott. I hope to meet you on my next trip to Carmel/pebble. Oddly enough Poppy is the only course on the peninsula I have not played. I guess hitting practice balls there does not count.

Huck,

If people don't play it in this weather, how in the world does anyone expect to be able to reach Mucci-esque knowledge of the course in ALL conditions?  $395 or no $395, you can't put a price on complete knowledge.

Well now that is a very good point.
 ;D

Do remember also it's only 12:30 here... groups are starting to come through.  Given normal resort time pace of play, these guys likely started not much after dawn. :'(

And JB, no surprise you haven't played Poppy - your time on the Peninsula is most definitely spent on superior courses.  Hey, I like Poppy... but if one can play some of the others, it's always gonna be low priority.
