17th at Pinehurst no.2 - OVERRATED!!
« on: July 01, 1999, 08:00:00 PM »
Some holes get overrated, generally because of where they fall late in a round. I believe that to be true for the 17th at No. 2. Visually, it is no great beauty. And from a playing point of view, it is't even hard. In fact, other than the two short par fours and the two par fives at the US Open, the 17th was the easiest hole.  Overall, I would say it is the weakest par three on the course. Can someone please explain why it gets singled out as among the best on the course and in North Carolina?

I agree -- why in the world is it the most photgraphed hole on the course?  It's the least distinctive of the four short holes and is not representative of the course -- it relies on unimaginative bunkering rather than the famous (now infamous) swales and slopes (as with the 6th and the left side of the 15th).I think the reason is simply that it photgraphs well -- bunkers show up well in photos but it is difficult to capture green contouring and its surrounds.

Here's an OLD post about Pinhurst #2.  I was wondering what people thought with the US Open coming up this month.

all I can remember about that hole is missing my 3-footer for birdie...I'll blame it on the large amount of break I failed to judge correctly >:( >:( >:(

Ha, similar situation for me except it was my caddy who misread the putt (for the upteenth time for the day ...).

On the 18th hole I finally told him I didn't need any assistance and made an 15 footer for a Payne Stewart-like par ...
"... and I liked the guy ..."

Ask Tiger how easy it was to bogey the 71st hole of the open. If Payne hadn't made the putt on 18 it would have cost Tiger a spot in the playoff.

Payne birdied 17 and won by two over Tiger. Mickleson parred 17.

I think one of the best putts I ever saw was Payne' 25-footer for par on 16...what a putt that was.........
