Does anyone know if any major damage was done to the Mid Ocean Club course as a result of the recent hurricane in Bermuda?

I hear there might be a few more water hazards.

Evan,

I sent an e-mail to the superintendent, Norman Furtado, yesterday afternoon but haven't heard anything back yet.  I'm sure he's busy ... and much of the island is without power so we probably won't hear for a couple of days.  But I will share his report when I hear from him.

AOL says four people were missing and presumed dead when their cars blew off the causeway that connects the main island to the airport ... so the winds were pretty serious.  That's about a mile from Mid Ocean's clubhouse.  I just hope everyone is okay there.

Evan,

I heard there was extensive damage to "golf courses" but that's pretty general, and more likely to mean Port Royal with all of its trees vs Mid Ocean. I hope it isn't bad--Bermuda is a special place. Guess we'll know more soon.

Bermuda is one of my favorite places on the planet, but I cannot imagine buying a house over there given how small and exposed it is to the capricious forces of nature. Bermuda is not so much an island as an atoll, naked and alone in the middle of the Atlantic.

A few years ago, they showed me photos of the damage after the hurricane of (I think) 1991? In truth, it blew over so many trees that the Head Pro and Club Sec. both thought the golf course was improved by opening up the fairways a bit.

I am trying to figure out how anybody could be stupid enough to drive across that causeway from the airport towards Castle Harbour in a hurricane.

I can't think of where the golf course could have salt water rolling over it except maybe #18. Of course, Mangrove Lake might have overflown . . . . gawd, I hope not.

I'll bet that catch-basin on the right side of the 16th fairway was a deep lake . . .

Two of them were police on duty.  The other two I guess I would consider an example of natural selection...
