Best Course to play in the fall
« on: August 26, 2003, 04:23:30 PM »
To all -

It seems that we didn't really have a summer here in the Northeast.  I particularly love to play in the fall as the trees (Wretched as they may be to some) turn colors, Indian Summer October days, and the forgiving "Leaf Rule" come into play.  Hey, in the great white north, we're glad to stretch the season out for as long as we can.

Towards that end, I would love to hear other CGAer's favorite fall venues.  Mine include:

PVGC
Yale
Richter Park
WF West and East (Even post tree-cutting, badly needed)
Tuxedo
Sleepy Hollow

Any course in Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont.

Michael, you beat me to it, I was about to say the same thing, except to inlcude all of New England.  Any Donald Ross course in September/October in New England can be beautiful.

While I love the fall colors at my home course at Yale

#6- pre Rulewich butchering

nothing can beat the colorful vistas of the palisades across the hudson and the internal vistas at Sleepy Hollow.  Great call.

Taconic, Waconah, Berkshire Hills, Wyantenuck for beauty and great golf.

Anything in the Catskills for beauty.

Out of respect for Geoffrey, I'll amend my above statment to any course in New England other than Crumpin Fox.   ;D

Dan

No need to revise on my account.  I actually like Ballyowen and Metedeconk. I have not played Crumpin fox but I've heard good things and I'm sure its scenic in the fall.

I just wish an architect (The Butcher of New Haven) who stated that "I'm a golf course architect not a historian" would keep his insensitive paws off a classic course like Yale.

The Orchards in October is fantastic, more orange and red than green.

I'd suggest the newest addition to the bucolic New England landscape, Pete Dye & Tim Liddy's Wintonbury Hills GC in Bloomfield, Conn. Lots of trees around the site and lovely ridgelines, but trees never intrude upon play. Fairways are 45 yards wide, lined with fescues. There's only one conifer - a mature pine - on the entire 291-acre property.

We'll do some sort of GCA/raters outing this fall there - opens Sept. 22

The best course to play in the Fall is any golf course that has no trees and consequently no leaves on it!

Its difficult not to choose a course in your own neighborhood....I'd go with The Golf Club.

The Honors Course.

Many different textures and turf varieties in a very natural setting; all accentuated by the incredible East Tennessee fall colors, of course including ORANGE.. :)

I'll second Shivas' vote for Blackwolf River.  Sounds like a short road trip.  However, a Faultless works better for trout.

TE Paul--Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Something like Sand Hills or Wild Horse, maybe even Black Mesa?   ;)

A winning combo - The Vol Navy on Saturday, Honors on Sunday?

Tough to get a good swing tempo to "Rocky Top".

If you've ever been one of those who opined that Pebble Beach is overrated because of its location and views, please don't try and say that fall colors add anything to a round of golf. What does leaf color have to do with it?  :)

Tom and Doug are (W)right

The champions of non-leafiness, however are the true links of GBI.  Plus, they get some fascinating winds in the autumn, and the beers and whiskies at the 19th ain't bad either.........
