Hempstead Golf & Country Club - Long Island, NY
« on: July 09, 2003, 08:07:36 AM »
I played this course for the first time on Monday in a tournament and loved it.  From what I could dig up it was a 18 hole design by Peter Lees and then Tillinghast came in and tore up 7 holes and remade them.  I think Stephen Kaye did some bunker restoration in recent years and I have to say that I though the bunkers were fabulous.

A great mix of some long par 4's and about four short par 4's which are almost all drivable but with a heavy risk/reward to them.

Anyone else ever play here and have comments?

Also, does anyone know which holes are the Tillinghast holes?

Jeff:  I believe you mean North Hempstead.  If so,  it is one of many good courses that few people know about because of a lack of notoriety.  I grew up in that area and if you recall the view off to the east over the former sand pits that all used to be undeveloped.  When I was younger there used to be these huge mountains of sand which you could just throw yourself off of and roll down.  Looking back I'm probably lucky my friends and I didn't create an avalanche.  Also, I learned to ice skate on the pond on the second hole.  I don't know if the club allows this anymore.  Oh, to be young again!

woof,

Actually, there is both a North Hempstead CC and a Hempstead G&CC.  I know this because one of my closest friends is the assistant pro at North Hempstead CC and another acquaintance of mine is the head pro at Hempstead G&CC.

I still have yet to play North Hempstead CC which I am sure I'll do before the end of summer.

I didn't know Peter Lees produced any of his own designs. I do believe Lees built a number of Tillinghast designs on LI.

I read a piece in a book that gives credit to Lees for the 18 hole original layout at the present site.  It goes on to say that Tillinghast came in and redid 7 holes.  Maybe Lees was working for Tillinghast and Tilly came to see the end result and took 7 holes into his own hands after Lees was already done.  I'm curious to know the details.

So does that mean you played well?
