Who am I - #3?

This might be easier ...

And how does this hole rate as a short risk/reward par-4?

Heck even I know that one.

Never been there, though.  I hear it's gone through extensive changes recently.

What risk/reward? Wouldn't the best and safest line be down the right side?
EDIT: Don't know the length. Do you mean risk/reward on how far you drive the ball? If it is reachable, or nearly so, then it would seem too risky to try to reach.

Garland:  sure, but I think the question might be how FAR to go toward the green. As I say I've never been there, and I suck at estimating distance.  But if that hole is 300 or less, there might be great temptation to wack one at the right side, hoping for the kick down toward and perhaps on to the green.  If the hole is over 350, then I'm with you, there's little thought involved here outside of stay right, pick a distance that feels right.

I have no interest in going to Hawaii, but this hole looks very cool. If the grass is kept short enough to try to play the ball off the slope short and right of the green I'd be game to give it a go.

I gave it a go, hit one right center and it ended up bouncing into the hazard left. This hole looks better than it is...

Garland / Tom -

Perhaps Leary can confirm but from the tips I believe it is 330 yards, not sure of the prevailing winds.

I also believe it is the 16th hole on the card which might make it an interesting match play hole late in the round.

I have heard from a couple who have played it that this may be one of the worst holes on the course

You'd have to be crazy - or three down - to hit a drive past those last palm trees.    :-\

Ryan,

It sure isn't a CPC #16, is it? ;)

I was there not long ago. The entire back nine is closed for extensive renovation - apparently some housing and trying to make a few more holes on the water.

Sounds about right. It is also significantly downhill, which is hard to see here. Simper has to worry about the water right more than left ;)

from the next up tee:

from right side of fairway:

An iron from the tips (not worth it to go for it) left me 90 yards away here:

The green is practically dead flat, IIRC (mini lighthouse at left, stringbean putting):

I have played it a few times.  One of the prettiest holes on the course and one of the worst to play.  As I recall about a 4 iron off the tee with no other option available.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

This hole looks to play the same as 14 on RCD's second course. Its a godd Matchplay hole to go for the green but is a boring 4-iron, Wedge in strokeplay.

Sure looks different from the tee vs. that first aerial.

Overall, a pretty good course.  At least, I thought so in early 1992 when I played it.

Kauai.

On Kauai, this is the 16th hole at Kauai Lagoons Kiele Course, a Nicklaus design.

What a disappointment the aerial looks great then from ground level it looks awful. Looks like a risk or failure hole to me....just no sign of a reward!

I believe the renovation of the back nine is tearing up one of the other coastal holes, but they're leaving this one ... probably just because the view across the little bay does not make it prime Hawaiian real estate.

Just goes to show you that coastal property doesn't guarantee one of the great courses in the world.
