Dan,
Yup, same guy! Got off to great start winning 4 times on the Hogan Tour (now Nationwide) to get his card. Won the Houston Open, then finished 5th at the Masters and got up to about 30 in the world rankings. Had his card for several years, lost it, but got through Q finals two or three times, then ended up on the Nationwide where he has been for the past several years.
But since you bring up the shot in the Houston Open, and I have read Jimmy publicly confirm the TRUE story, I'll tell it to you:
When Jimmy first got his PGA card he was playing great, but tended to slide back a little on one of the weekend days. "Spending money" as he moved back on the leaderboard. So on Sunday of the Houston Open in '93, Jimmy is fighting for the lead, but bogies 13 and 14 to drop two back...As they walk off the 14th green, Jim's caddy quietly mutters "here we go again." Unfortunately, Jimmy hears this and asks, "what did you say?'" The caddy says "nothing" but Jimmy persists: "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" and I guess the caddy just shuts up...while steam is coming out of Jimmy's ears. He takes his driver on the par 5 15th, smokes it down the middle, and does NOT give it back to the caddy! He hits driver again from the deck to 2 feet, taps in for eagle, and ends up making birdie on 18 to get in a playoff and winning the playoff!
