The World Atlas of Golf
« on: October 31, 2007, 03:38:03 AM »
What's the earliest edition than anyone has ?

How has that book evolved as each new edition was published ?

When will the next issue be published ?

Is "The World Atlas of Golf" THE book that initiated an interest in GCA amongst golfers ?

Mine is 1976, but there probably are earlier editions out there.

I was only 10 years old in '76 & it was the first golf book I ever received. Right from the start I was interested in why courses were designed the way they were & this book fuelled that fire.

Pat, the 30th anniversary edition is coming out next year and will be heavily influenced by members of this parish. I think I am right in saying that Mark Rowlinson is the editor, Rich Goodale is writing about numerous Scottish and Irish courses, Ran is writing about some top courses in Europe and UK (and one or two US?). I think Daniel Wexler and Mike Clayton maybe also writing some reports - and no doubt some others too who I don't know about.

Andrew - I thought the 1st Edition was 1976. Shows your age champ  ;D

I got  the 4th Edition and was attracted by the 3D maps - I think they are superb and bought my latest edition 10 years on (for a much cheaper price than the original - work that one out ?)

Patrick - yes - it got me on the road to interest in GCA. My principal aim after reading it then was to see all those listed in GB&I - as after all it's titled with "The Greatest courses and how they are played". They say never judge a book by it's cover but for once the nay-sayers may be wrong.  ;D

The gazeter is also very useful in planning golf trips to get a feeling of which courses to target (did I say I like the routing maps ?).

A mighty fine book - now if they could get more Australian courses in it I may just have to add to the collection.
 ;)

Andrew - maybe one of the aforementioned will chip in, but I am pretty sure the next edition is being billed as the 30th anniversary. A mystery!

It was the first book about golf courses that I ever owned. 1976 sounds about right, as I was in Jr. High School at the time. I'd check my copy, but I lent it to my then father-in-law back in the late 80's, and he still has it. Marriages may fail, but golf abides!

Those maps were what did it for me. It was my first entree into a world I scarcely knew existed.

I've got the 76 one and it states 'first edition published 1976'. Great book. Oakmont looked like it does now, but Olympic doesn't.

I donated my 1976 edition to the Bandon Dunes library.

I'll say that my 1976 edition of WAG sparked my interest but THE book that got me really into it was The Golf Course by Cornish and Whitten published in 1981.

I have the 1991 3rd Edition.

I don't know how many times I read it cover to cover in high school.
