In Exile...Barnes & Noble vs Any Golf Course
« on: September 29, 2007, 05:08:53 PM »
If you were forced into eternal exile and had to choose between any Barnes & Noble or Public Golf Course which would you choose and why.  Normal public flow would ensue and new product would arrive.  The only stipulation would be that you could never leave the property or have relationships outside of your choice.  I have to say that the women of B&N are oddly hot which could sway my vote even though I am leaning towards Pinehurst.

Could I sneak around the corner to the book store down the block from St. Andrews?

No...One of the huge problems of choosing a golf course..and a famous one at that is the culture of golf tourism.  That is all you get and nothing more.

John,
This might be valid if you picked on Borders. It has food and restrooms. As I get creakier the bookstore looms more appealing.

All those selecting the golf course are now tied for the lead in the dork contest thread from a couple weeks ago...it's not even close...or at least it shouldn't be...

I have had one interesting day observing the cultures of differing consuming societies.  It has gone ike this from Midnight until now...Casino, Hotel, Golf Course, Car Dealership, Mega-Bookstore, Super Market, Catholic Church, Golf Super Store and now I'm sitting in the parking lot of an Amish Buffet.  Each is great in pieces but hell in exile...I am starting to lean toward a bookstore with a nice out door courtyard in an international city.  This is not like a choice between a prision with either golf or books..It is an examination in the microcultures of our everyday events and in this forum how we might improve that of golf.

John,
apologies, but today you've actually experienced only ONE 'consuming society' and it's called 'America'.

Learn to live with it dear boy or move to the East Neuk...actually, on second thoughts, the East Neuk is either little america or little england so better move to Lithuania or Azerbaijan. They're more likely to appeal to your sensibilities.

John,

In fact, whenever I visit a low cost muni, I do see many senior golfers who have in effect exiled themselves to that course and appear to be quite happy.

My take on it is their life is Sh**/Shower/Shave (and some seem to skip this step)/breakfast and paper/9 to 18 holes of walking golf/afternoon drink/meal/watch the "Price is Right"/go to sleep/get up and do it again.  I am sure the occaisional chore or special event breaks up the routine.

I would call that a micro culture and really the backbone of how golf is played in America, that we rarely consider here in our discussions (mostly) of great courses.

I think you are cheating by adding the outdoor cafe to the list, BTW.

JK,
I'd take the golf course, there are more stories.

Jim,

Your comment could very well be serious, or funny. If the latter, I got the joke!

Last time I was in BN, I saw a guy reading the phone book. He said there were too many characters and not enough plot.....

bah-dum ching!!

I'd take a great golf course over a book store everyday.  Eventually you'd read every book, but a great golf course reveals something new every time...
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I'd take the Evergreen Municipal Golf Course in Evergreen, Colorado. Short enough to grow old on - quirky enough to provide interest - cart girls recruited from the local high school, generally speaking - a nice 19th hole with stories galore available.............

JC same could be said for golf courses.  If you think you can appreciate a great work of art on one viewing you are either Pauline Kael, or you need to go back to school.

Im pretty sure my wife would divorce me if I decided I needed a third degree....so I'll stick with playing golf, that never gets me in trouble ;D
