Chambers Bay # 10, in front of forward tees.
Sexy ? Scoring par or better. Unlikely!  Only a tease if the NW winds are blowin'.

Pete,

What's your take on the dozer treadmarks?  At first I found them unseemly, but they grew on me as an open confession of man's handiwork.  I assume over time they will be hidden by tall fescue.

The dozer treadmarks have a functional purpose.  Tiger Bernhardt and I had dinner with John Strawn last month after Tiger and I had played Chambers Bay, and John explained that the small depressions made by the dozer treads gave the fescue seed enough shelter to take root and grow without having to excessively water to the point the fescue would grow too thick.  While the tread marks are a little jarring, I think the expectation is that within a year or so, the fescue will grow to the point where you won't notice the tracks.

Mike,
They are much better than seeing tire tracks in soft fairways.
Necessary for root bedding in a windy clime. As the course matures they will become less visible unless they are up close and personal. I'm am okay with them unless my ball nestles in one, then they are unfair ;D

I can't google a photo, but they say the Mae West mounds done by Des Muirhead were sexy like a painted trollop.   ;D

I'm a little bit smitten w/ Chambers Bay.  Yesterday's setting sun casting deep shadows over thin ribbons of green fairway spread below was breath-taking.

Thanks Peter. That really fooled me. There's a photo I've seen of Enniscrone that looks just like this. CB looks really good!

In my sophomoric opinion, EH is not worthy as a major championship venue, though I continue to think fondly of the golf course.   If Whistling Straits can host the PGA, I see no reason why Chambers Bay could not as well.  Like WS, CB has two or three holes that are glaringly inconsistent with the balance of the golf course and I believe both courses are in the same league, though not necessarily tied for the league lead.

Logistically, CB has such extreme width that the edge of many fairways could be staked off to easily accomodate galleries who could also access various sections of the course via the walking trails that were getting heavy use by the general public yesterday.

More specifics on CB later.

Mike, they considerably narrowed some FWs at Whistling when the PGA was held there, and they never mowed them back out, or so I was told.  They were narrowed at same width of PGA at this years Senior USGA.  CB in a landslide...  ;) ;D 8)

Dick,

CB also benefits greatly from the wind which appeared mild but significantly impacted distance and direction.

Chambers gets the major because the USGA wants a venue in the Northwest, not neccarilly due to ultimate quality.

Chambers is worthy but in a tie, the Pacific Northwest wins.

They have broad opens spaces for corporate tents and TV infrastructure, they have NO weather delays and they have tee times in prime time on the east coast.

For the millionth time, I expect to se a US Am or Mid Am announced soon as a test to the long hitters.  Look for The Home Course to be the qualifier partner to Chambers, although Oakbrook is closer and could be stretched to accomadate the needed length.

I figure if I keep writing that, someone might actually make it happen. 8)

I agree Mike.

Yesterday was a perfect day.  There was no other place I would have rather been than Chambers.  Admittedly the back pin on 16 made me want to commit suicide...lol...

#10 is a great hole.  I think the back pin is a sucker though.  Its cool looking (sexy...no comment there) and fun to play.

Mike,

I'd like to contribute to your initial question here instead of piling on the love-fest this has become.  The problem is that I can't remember the last time I thought a golf hole was sexy.

I've used a lot of adjectives to define a lot of holes in my time, but not that one.

Give me hint of what inspires this emotion in you and I'll see if I can find one in the picture archives.  Who knows - maybe I'll be seduced as well.

Michael Hendren's high opinion of a course resonates deeply with me.

SO... I've asked this before, in a different way, but I'll try again with specifics:

I shall be attending a wedding in Seattle on Saturday November 3.  For many reasons it must be a quick trip; the plan had been to fly Friday night, return fairly early Sunday morning.  The Sunday return part cannot be changed - we have to be back mid-day that day for sure.  I will be going with my non-golfing wife.  I also have many work days that will be missed between now and then for golf reasons.

So the question is this:  do I make my wife get up early and have both of us miss work on that Friday, so that I can arrive in time to play Chambers Bay that day?

I had pretty much decided against it, for reasons of marital and work sanity, and believing that the weather is likely to suck so mightily then that it won't be worth the sacrifice/marital payment to be made.  I also figured I'd get back to Seattle some time next year.

SOOOO... do I cash in the marital and work chips to make this happen on a November Friday?

Wait - I think I've got it.  If this doesn't get you all hot and bothered, then what will....

From the front...

Or the rear...

This one has everything a GCA man dreams about at night.

Tom,

The best way to describe Chambers is amazing.
It's a course thats great no matter the weather (albeit playing and walking it in pouring rain would suck!).

Personally, I'd call it an oppurtunity missed to come up here and not play it.
But then again, I completely understand the family part of the trip...me thinks that if you got the ok from the wife then all is good in the world, right....

You are forgiven for not grasping all of the ramifications involved in this, you're too young to possibly know.

 ;D

The question is this, made simpler:  is Chambers Bay great enough - and more importantly, will the weather be decent enough on November 2 - to REALLY piss off one's wife and risk losing one's job to play it?

Think of it that way.  I believe the course is great enough.  What worries me is the weather.

Huckster, I will be back out in Oregon next summer and wispy fescue will be filling the dozer treads.  How about we arrange a rendezvous with some NW types?

Well Bill, you know me and group events.  I always WANT to do them, rarely can.  So that does factor into this... while I think I will get back to Seattle (my wife's best friend lives there so it's always a positive to suggest a trip there), I'm usually far more optomistic than my reality allows.  So might it be worth all of the ramifications to try to do this when I am there for sure?

I'm just really worried about making this type of commitment and then having Bandon in February weather, or worse.

 ;)
