Philadelphia GCA Outing-September 28 & 29FINAL PLANS
« on: August 30, 2007, 06:16:57 PM »
As the Crump Cup at Pine Valley is set for Sunday, September 30, I was thinking of scheduling the Outing for Saturday, September 29 so that out of towners can meet the group of cheese steak and golf aficionados. How about Deerfield in Delaware followed by a ride on I95 to dinner at Tony Lukes?

Does this work?

The Crump Cup final is on September 16th.  I happen to know for a fact that Jamie Slonis was not in training this evening  ;)

As a very new member here, I'd be thrilled to be included in something on the Saturday before the Crump Cup.

I thought the Crump Cup was the last Sunday in September.

The 29th still works for me.

Any other suggestions for a venue? FDR? ;D

How 'bout a round at Valley Forge followed by a meal at the Taco Bell in the Court at the KofP Mall.   :D

Steve,

The date has been moved up this year so it doesn't conflict with the US Mid-Am at Bandon.

Wayne has the correct date.

Didn't Walter Hagen train like we did today? ;D  His record was pretty solid.

Hahahaha.....

Sorry, Jamie...I think I'm addicted and I'm starting to think they put morphine in the stuff.

Perhaps some melted provolone and pulverized rabe soaked beef is just what I need to slow the oxygen flow to my brain and choke off those addicted cells?   ;D

You do know that Valley Forge GC has disappeared, right?

it'd be a fascinating trip, though..  To see what happens to a golf course left unmaintained.  It's amazing to see how quickly the golf course has 'disappeared' under nature's influence.

I'm definitely interested.  I played Deerfield for the first time on Wednesday and was very impressed. Probably the toughest 6300 golf course I've played, and it's in wonderful condition right now.

Steve,

Please count me in.

But, a Philly outing in Delaware?  I don't even know where Delaware is.

Cobbs Creek?

Oh yes, I'm from that area and do miss the ole VF.  They would be open during the winter when I needed a golf fix and I think the last year it was 10 bucks after noon.

Steve:

Why not play at a layout relatively near to PV -- RiverWinds is a good example. Ditto Scotland Run. Would be nice to play Pine Hill but it's now private and access may be an issue.

Need to know the precise date ASAP.

Delaware would make it easier for the DC guys to get there.

I'm in.  I would suggest The Golf Course at Glen Mills.  Almost as easy to get to as the courses in northern Delaware for the DC crowd and an interesting design.

Some facts:

Weekend rates at Glen Mills are $95

Riverwinds is under new ownership. I'm not sure of conditions there as I haven't played there this year. Earlier reports were not favorable. It's possible and more convenient to Tony Luke's.

Deerfield is off I95 so a trip to Tony Luke's after golf is very possible plus weekend rates are $55 for tee times after 11am.Also, it's a faux Flynn course.

Cobbs Creek is possible but the earlier date in May that was canceled did not generate much response for Cobbs.

I get a slightly uncomfortable feeling every time I drive by the course and see how much more it's progressed back towards nature. No, I was not a huge fan of the course, but I played there a number of times in the late 1980's. It sure beat the soulless concrete and asphalt alternative that typifies the King of Prussia surroundings.

What is PV protocol for Crump Cup attendance?

James,

The public is invited.   There are no gallery ropes and other than being careful to not disturb the matches inappropriately, one is largely free to wander and study the golf course.

It's highly, highly recommended.

Mike,
is the well known 'camera of MikeCirba' allowed to take occasional snapshots of an architectural bent during the Cup of Crump?
And then to publish said bent pics on a VERY bent website?

Martin,

I would only do that with the club's permission, which I'm about as likely to get as a date with Angelina Jolie.

Mike, I guess what I'm asking is, Do spectators need to register in advance, or is it a matter of just showing up?  I've attended several matches where the private club has required pre-registration for the public.

James,

Just show up.   I believe there may be a charitable donation at the gate for some local concern, but it's a lovely day and all very low-key.

If you've never been there before, it's a very emotional journey up the little path after you get in the gate.   If you don't audibly gasp at your first look around, your heart isn't beating.
