This site has a lot of old photos mostly of golfers (some famous) and clubhouses in the Chicago area.

Hope these photos make it - haven't done this before.

Some really fun pics in there. I love the ones of Egan. I found these a while ago and would love to see more from that time period and more pics of the courses. Glad they put these online.

I love the LOC as they have some really neat stuff online. My favorites are the old movies from the late 1890's to the 1930's. They have footage just after the 1906 earthquake with people walking down Market Street.
If I could only find the movie that Marion Hollins made of Cypress Point in 1928 then I would be a very happy man.

Clyde --

Thanks for the inspiration.

Just did a query at the Minnesota Historical Society, asking for all art and photographs relating to golf.

516 images. Will be spending very good parts of today looking at them.

Here's a link, for anyone interested:  Historic Minnesota Golf Photographs

Dan,

Regarding the Minnesota Historical Society... one of their chief archivists is Tillinghast's gret-granddaughter Monica. She helped put together this exhibit. ;D

Dan -

First things first. I hope you will agree that addressing you as "Dan" is a "fair use" of the "Dan" trademark and that you will not think I am infringing on your federal and state rights. I agree that your granting me permission to use "Dan" in this instance shall not be deemed your consent to any other use of "Dan" in the future.

Thanks. Just wanted to clear that up.

Second, was Stillwater designed by MacKenzie? I ask because the course is so effectively camouflaged that I don't see it. ;)

Boy, thanks you guys, just what I need to waste another day browsing these incredible photo archives...

I particularly liked the gallery of lady golfers around Chicago.  How did they ever allow high fashion women's golf attire(particularly the hats) to slip away into the mundane and banal.

These women knew how to dress for the mid summer heat and humidity, and how to turn a man's fancy with provacative dress...

It really doesn't take that long for a forest to appear where a golf course used to be, does it?

Stillwater CC is now one of the tightest and most tree-lined courses in the Twin Cities, though many of the ash trees are coming down due to an infestation. Apparently, nature abhors an arboretum.

I should never comment on a course after only one playing, but ...

Stillwater doesn't seem all that tight to me, Rick -- except on a few holes where one needn't hit driver off the tee to find a good spot from which to approach the green.

Yes, it's tree-lined; possibly excessively, in a few spots -- but what I like about its tree-linedness is that the trees are widely enough spaced that they will produce
the possibility of many very interesting recovery shots, and not very many punch-outs or unplayable lies.

In regard to the dying trees: Let us hope the Tree Committee sees fit to kiss their ashes goodbye -- and cover their ash holes  with grass.

Thanks. "Robert M." is no relation I know of.

Scrolling through the  Chicago Daily News pictures, it's striking how many there are of Chandler Egan.
They seemed to treat him as a movie star. Egan was handsome enough to carry it off.

We forget that he was one of the first great US players of the 20th century.

Guys, if you have knowledge of any old golf architecture photos let Clyde, Bob Crosby, Dunlop White or me know about them, what they are and where they are.

This new USGA Architecture Archive would like to know about anything like that to consider digitizing it and putting it on their website for the world to appreciate.

Thank you to all you little mole-like researchers out there for your cooperation. There may be a sleeve of NXTs or "Cheater Line" Titleists at the end of the road for you all.

Great Photos Dan.  We were looking for an aerial of Minikahda and 1937 was the best we could find.  The hedge in front of the club house still stands as well as 1500 additional trees.

A Green Shape Jeff Brauer Has Never Considered -- Yet (The "Texas Green" at Alexandria Golf Club, Alexandria, Minnesota, circa 1940)

No, but only because its been done here in DFW at Las Colinas.....and that left middle pin position (just east of El Paso) is a killer.....

I am noodling on doing a MacK "South America green" and have already done the "Africa" green in a few places.  Now I will have to check a map and see what states have real design potential!

Good to see old TM Dan ( or is it TM Kelly?) gettin jiggy with it!

The Door County peninsula would be problematical -- but otherwise, given the proper contouring, Wisconsin is promising!

Iowa, too -- if you don't mind a couple of straight edges:

And how about South Carolina?

Down East might present some maintenance problems, but ...

Is there anyway we can get this pressed onto a GCA t-shirt.

This is what our wives and significant others probably envision when they think of this group anyway..  ;)
