I played Erin Hills on my little trip last week too and loved it. The Double Blacks are impressive. There are 6 par 4s over 500 yards. I think the longest is 535. It is certainly a man sized course. I played one double black hole (I am not totally nuts) and hit a good drive (I thought) and had 257 left. Ouch.
I wish those participants the best.

By the way, I loved the Dell hole, but they say they won't use that hole during tournaments and have another par 3 they will use. I see nothing wrong with this hole as the green sit directly next to the 6th tee so you get a good idea of where the flag is. My entire group parred the hole and two of us had real good looks at birdie. I say keep the hole.

How sweet is that to have such a small field with many players not eligible for prize money and the winner gets 5K.  They could have filled this up with pros from all over the country.

A great and terrible occurance.

Terrible because it gaurantees who the winner will be everytime.

Great because the reality that so many for so long have warned about has come about.

If it were a stock, I would sell it.

I don't see the problem in that I have always enjoyed short par 5's, long par 5's and driveable 4's.  This course has all that in spades.

FYI, and not that it makes much difference, but the 8400 yd mark includes all 19 holes.  I believe the tournament had 19 hole rounds.

Cheers,
Brad

Thanks Brad but some of us can read and a few even do math.  I would be curious what is the maximum length of the Dell hole.  When Flynn built his courses to be elastic he was a genuis, when a modern architect does so he is the devil...You guys need to take a look around the golf world and ask yourself if these so called easy to hit clubs and balls are really all that bad.  On a side note my 12 year old who just became very serious about the game is finding it quite enjoyable.  Just last night I informed him to relax and take comfort in the fact that by the time he is 15 he will be hitting the ball 300 yds.  It is nice to know that with a little patience and work on a short game that anyone can become a fine college level golfer.  What is wrong with that?

Relax, John. Brad is just making the same point that I was going to make. The course only played about 8250 or 8300 yards. I really don't think that is that long. 535 yards is the longest par 4. For me, that is a good drive and a 2 or 3-iron, just what a long par 4 used to be 10 or 15 years ago. Does anyone remember when you HAD to hit the ball solidly to get home on some par 4's? The par 3's were all 250 or less. I think to get a course that is playing LONG like the courses of old, I think you have to get into the 85 or 9000 yard range. 535 yard par 4's aren't going to scare any professionals.

Adam,

I don't understand your statement. Are you saying the same guy will win every time?

By the way, I would have loved to play in the tournament--kind of like playing in Scotland in a big wind or terrible weather, par almost becomes irrelevant and you have no real idea what a good score is until everyone finishes.
