Erin Hills (8/14) & Lawsonia Links (8/16)
« on: July 23, 2007, 01:30:25 PM »
I have a foursome booked at Erin Hills at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14th and at Lawsonia Links at 8:50 a.m. on Thursday, August 16th with three spots available each day.

Messrs. Goldman and Swanson have first priority given their previous IM's but all are welcome to send an IM - first come, first serve.

In fairness to both courses, I'll give up any unused spots at week's end.

Hi Mike,
I'm still down for Lawsonia, and might just make a day of it and play 36 if you are planning to also.  I'm looking forward to it very much :).

Cheers,
Brad

Brad, I've got a 5:45 p.m. flight out of Madison on Thursday so I can only play 18 at Lawsonia.  I'm sure I'll regret that.  Glad you can join me as I look forward to seeing how the game is intended to be played.

Nothwithstanding the Langford event a little later, I will be wounded if I come all the way to Wisconsin for the first time ever and Dick Daley no-shows. - not to call anybody out!

Mike,
I may have an opportunity to do some arm twisting in person with said cheesehead (if it is even necessary?) at Greywalls this weekend.

Cheers,
Brad

Mike, I'm not sure if I mentioned that Thurs is our regular Men's club day.  It is considered very bad form within our gang to miss.  Our tee time is 10:54, plus, it is steak fry night.

I'm now wondering if ERin Hills should be placed on my dance card instead, if you have the slot?  IM me when you can...

I may be up for joining you for an afternoon round at Lawsonia that Thursday if you do 36 that day.  Haven't played with Brad for a few years now, I think we'd both enjoy the architecture much better at Lawsonia than we did that day at Bos Landen! :o

Michael & Brad,

Hope you guys have a great time! I was fortunate enough to spend 3 days @ Lawsonia in June: played 36 on the Woodlands and 63 on the Links. The Links has to be one of my favorite courses of all time. The day before arriving @ Lawsonia I played the Irish @ Whistling Straits & I much preferred the Links. I didn't get down to Madison but one of our group did and has since posted his impressions and pics of Erin Hills:

Look forward to meeting you Michael @ the Dixie Cup

Brad, maybe the next time I'm up your way it will coincide with your annual round!  ;D

As the man gripping the Gospel gun in the big revival tent likes to say:

Two have come forward.  Are there any others?

Brad Swanson is in for Lawsonia.
Jeff Goldman is in for Erin Hills.

Any others?

Mike

Note: Barney has yet to sanction this as an official Hillbilly Hit-N-Run event.

Last call.

One spot available Tuesday @ 2:30 p.m. Erin Hills.  Messrs. Goldman and Daley are in.

Two spots available Thursday @ 9:00 a.m. to join Mr. Swanson and me at Lawsonia Links.  Brad will do 36 while I head to the airport after 18.

Both subject to me confirming that the courses have booked someone to join us.

Yeah, curiously quiet on the Volunteer-Badger match at Lawsonia.

I should mention, Mike's bags were LOST by the airlines.  He played with rental clubs at Erin Hills.  Quite a deficit to take on such a challenging course.   I hope he either got his luggage back or they had rentals at Lawsonia.  But, it sucks to be at long anticipated courses and not have your sticks.

Gents,

My first trip to Wisconsin.  It indeed feels a lot like home, from the fabulous people, to the fondness for "pulled pork" and even the Git-R-Done Pub & Grub in Randolph.  As you know Hillbilly is a state of mind, and I believe it exists in your fine state.

Erin Hills has grown on me since Tuesday.  I can easily understand why opinions are polarized.  As for Stefanie in the golf shop, I fear Dick's Irish blood was too easily warmed.  Though a sweetheart, she would be lost in a crowd of co-eds in sun dresses in the student section down South at Knoxville, Auburn, Athens, Oxford, Tuscaloosa, Gainesville or Columbia just to name a few.

I am in love with Lawsonia Links and am astonished at the outstanding stewardship of its owner.  The maintenance, feel and both macro and micro look is right on the money.  Now that the course is on the radar screen and the ownership and staff are rightfully proud of what they have, this could should continue to be a treasured and accessible example of golden age golf course architecture for a long time.  That's a good thing.

I enjoyed watching Brad hit the golf ball but was a little disappointed when I eyed the Balco bag tag.  While he's no Matt Ward, he can move some furniture.

Brad was a little rusty with the wedge but naturally stiffed it at 18 to break 80.  Yours truly played well but was around 90 due to continued chipping problems and a bit of gamesmanship (apparently a Wis. thang) by Brad on the 6th after I parred four of the first five.

More on the golf courses later.

I have to concur with Mike regarding Lawsonia.  I've toured the course some half-dozen times now, and I see something new that makes me smile every time.  Its really great to play such a treasure of a course with GCAers, such as Mike, as getting to tour Lawsonia with a newcomer to the course is fun.  Mike is spot on with the stewardship of the course.  There really is no tinkering that needs to be done with this museum piece of classic architecture.  That really is probably more the exception than the rule.

No rubber snakes were harmed during our round, but I did allow some of Langford's excellent visual deception to surprise Mike on the front nine.  ;D  For myself, a modest grip change is taking its toll on my wedge game (multiple chili-dipped wedges on the front nine alone!), but I'll be ready for the tour in September. :)

Cheers,
Brad

Mike,

Four pars on the first 5 holes the first time around is a pretty fine feat.  I'd be happy with that anytime.  If the pin was in the back on three I bet that's the one that got you.

Brad,

I've played there well over 50 times and still have that same feeling about seeing something new and never tiring of what is there.  I can't wait to get back again.

Glad to hear a good time was had. My brother and I had a wonderful 36 holes at Lawsonia last year. When we checked in in the morning the lady at the counter was surprised to hear that a golfer had traveled across country to see the course. It is still a hidden gem to the wider golf world.

Mike:

You should get Bruce Pearl up to Randolph some time. The town has sent more basketball players to Div. 1 schools per capita than any I know, including one currently playing for Bucky and Bo that I'm sure the orange-chested one wished he had.
