Sugarloaf Mountain

Here are some photos of C&C's new course near Orlando. Looks good!  The website says they are offering free memberships ($20,000 value) with purchase of lots.

John Cullum, Pete B, John Conley -- is this open yet?  It doesn't look much like the rest of Orlando golf, does it?  :D

I don't claim to be an expert on local geography but isn't any Floridian course with 'Mountain' in its title something of a misnomer?

Obviously, those aren't Sugarloaf pics.  The course was originally supposed to open in late fall this year, but is now tentatively to open in early 2008.  Perhaps the drought affected this.

Yes, 'Mountain' and Florida don't exactly mesh, but the course is supposedly on the highest point in all of Florida's peninsula.

The course is in the Florida ridge country that also houses Mountain Lake (profiled in an In My Opinion piece on this site) and Southern Dunes, among other courses of interest.

Basically, the terrain directly east of Rt. 27 is quite rolling and hilly and comparable to anything in suburban Philadelphia or North Jersey, for example. The ridge runs from Lakes Wales to just north of Clermont, where Sugarloaf Mountain is located. Similar terrain is found in the Brooksville area (World Woods and Pete Dye's Southern Hills Plantation are here).

I drove up that way a few weeks back, and would be surprised to see any pictures up for the next month or so, unless they're showing the rough shape and terrain.

originally they said member opening at end of 2007...that looks like it isn't going to happen

very rough the last time I saw....about two months ago

hopefully will be open by mid 2008

Bill, the course has been discussed a great deal on this site in the last 18 months.  I think it looks terrific.  I'd be surprised if it isn't wonderful.

Lots are on sale.  I have the paperwork on them.  It isn't going as well as they suspected, I deduct, probably because of two things.

1) Orlando's housing slump is pronounced, even worse than the average market in our country, and
2) the place is really in the middle of nowhere.  In time it might seem like it is somewhere, but as it is right now it is very far from the exisiting Lake County schools.

I think they got overly exicted after the Bella Colina selling (a higher end development up the road)

Hopefully once the spur is built off the tollway, much more will come this way (Clermont)

The timing of the housing bubble is not helping matters...but for the low 100s to the high 200s you can get a lot with a membership and start building a quite nice house

The site is beautiful as is the surrounding area.

It IS out in the middle of no where but things are growing that way from both directions.

I was at Isleworth doing some work from last August thru Jan 2007.  I was impressed with the beauty of Clermont and the surrounding area.  I hope they get it built.  The directional poles were up when I was there and that seemed to be all that was done at that time.

I just drove up the turnpike on Sunday afternoon. I was surprised that I did not see a single billboard for Sugarloaf Mountain (a truly horrible name.)

But I am sure it is still on track, they just gave me a free subscription to Links magazine last week
