I would guess Herbert Fowler and it was criticism towards the National.

Sounds like Brad Klein
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

You beat me to it, Mark.  The last quote gave it away.  Interesting.  That makes me like Colt even more; I agree with him completely.  The course he was referring to as his least bad one, Swinley Forest, is a complete delight with a great collection of par 3s, something I look for in all golf courses (an insight into routing). I appreciate the aspect of par 3s in Flynn's body of work (on a course-by-course and overall portfolio basis) as that of Colt.

I was just reading through "Some essays on Golf Course Architecture" when  I saw this thread.

The pitch is one of the most beautiful and scientific strokes in the game, and every player, no matter how far or how accurately he is driving, should be encouraged to exhibit his skill in this respect and to reap the full benefit of it.

JMorgan,

Is your source Colt's essays and if so, how is it?

Regarding the second quote, I hadn't thought about it before, but many memorable colt holes play from, if not an elevated tee, then a tee from which the green can be seen. I have in my minds eye a number of par 3s and 4s that play across valleys, hollows, whatnot.

Did colt popularize this - is this one aspect of his being credited as bringing an "active" design intent to the game?

Wayne, we need to come up with a game for you called "Six Degrees of William Flynn."

Mark,

I don't think we need that many degrees.  I seem to be able to make it one or two at the most  ;)
