Tom Doak "Infomercial"
« on: April 11, 2007, 07:33:10 PM »
Couldn't find a prior post on this, but here's the link:
http://www.standrewsbeach.com/p/golf/tomdoak.htm

This is the first I've actually "heard" the man. I like what he says when asked, "What's the first principle in Tom Doak's design principles?"

Doak: "To try to do as little work as possible..."

Sign me up!

Also like the minitour of the 2nd, a hole I very much enjoyed!

Too bad they don't get into it for 18 holes, that would have been fun for a small segment of the golfing population.

Thanks for the link Mark. It's great to have a voice to go with words!

TD, I love how fast you did the yds to meters conversion in the conversation! Now that's doing quick math on your feet for a metric audience! ;)

INTERVIEWER:  "You do that thing where you figure out how far a good golfer can hit the ball, and then you put a bunker there, don't you?"

DOAK: "Heh, heh, heh... "

If you are looking for more of Tom on video check out the Renaissance Club at Archerfield site.  There is a 5 minute interview and some snippets of Tom walking the site.  Very cool.

I can see I will have to get a video camera and take a tour of the 3rd, 4th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th holes when Tom is back here doing the Fingal in order for the dense Melbournites to have full understanding...

Thanks, Daryl!

Does anyone else know of any architectural / architect videos on the web they can link here?

Mark F.: I for one would love to see that!

Pete and Alice Dye discuss their design thoughts, along with a flyover-through of the recently completed Firethorn (1986).

Where do you guys find this stuff?

I haven't been there since December 2004 so it's a bit old news by now.

Well Tom, the cat is out of the bag now. Here we thought you spent a lot of time working with little time for golf. At least that is the facade you maintain on this website. However, the video reveals you spend all your time travelling the world and playing golf!

Now we all want to be GCAs for sure!

Tom, you do have quite the following, don't you :)

"So your man hit it into a fairway bunker, hit the wrong side of the green, and couldn't hit a hybrid off a sidehill lie to take advantage of his length? We apologize for testing him so thoroughly." - Tom Doak, 6/29/10

Oh that was fun.  But, I think GCA.com should chip-in and buy you a suitable hat for your next Aussie infomercial, so you don't have to continually wisk away those pesky flies.

Mark,

I am not sure there is a correct term for those from Melbourne.  There are Taswegians for the two headed people on the island below us, then croweaters, sandgropers and banana benders for those unfortunate enough to reside in South Australia, Western Australian and Queensland respectively.

I can't even remember what we call people from the state above us, since 'wankers' usually suffices for me.

Queenslanders call them either 'Mexicans' (south of the border) or, from Rugby League state-of-origin, 'cockroaches'!

I think that is as much as many of us have heard Tom chat it up. I thought it was very good and well done.
