Wisconsin Classics

I came across this article from last summer and would like to know who wrote it. It's a good summary of what some of the classic courses in Wisconsin are up to.

thanks Craig...not sure who wrote it

I hope you don't mind if I ask this question:  anyone played Maple Bluff?  believe Doak mentioned it as a course he wanted to see in his Confidential Guide
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

Craig:

My guess is John Hughes, a WI-based golf writer; he's written at least one golf guide for the state and is the head of the firm that published the piece.

Paul:

Maple Bluff CC is near my home; I've not played, but walked the entire course when they hosted a Midwestern tourney for some of the better amateur women golfers in nation a few years ago. It's generally regarded as the best course public or private in the Madison area, and -- although perhaps a notch below Milwaukee CC or Blue Mound CC -- regarded as one of the best in the state. Very tough greens that are well-known as the fastest and toughest in the area; PGA pro Jerry Kelly, who I think may have learned to play there, hosted one of the "lessons from the pros" on the golf channel that was taped there (he absolutely butchered one of the holes; pretty funny moment.) Not terribly tight or tree-lined for a classic old parkland course; it very much gets its difficulty from its green complexes and deep bunkering near them. It was designed by a gca of some note whose name escapes me right now -- Colt and/or Alison? Flynn? Not Tilly, who had a hand in two other Madison courses. For Madison, it's a very old-money club, with the course dating back to the 1920s at least.

Paul:

I jumped to post before reading the entire article! I knew about Hills' work there, but honestly had not heard of Tweedie's connection to the course. To be honest, I've not heard all that much about Tweedie generally regarding golf course design.

Phil et al

I just checked out the website for Maple Bluff..they have pics of every hole, many of which look pretty interesting...in particular, 18 green seems to have a WHOLE lot of tilt to the right!!

Paul, that was a long time ago, and I hadn't even started to comtemplate golf course architecture.  I just played a few times a year then.  "The Bluff" had an annual traditions we called the "cop wide-open".  In the fall, on the last day before the course was closed to all, usually end of Oct to Nov., they invited any and all the law enforcement officers in Dane Co., to enjoy the course, and the copious amounts of F&B.  It probably sounds gratuitous, but it really wasn't.  No one expected any favors in return.  Hell, most of us didn't even know any of the members, or who was putting it on, specifically.  JUst a nice gesture to offer back to those that serve... so to speak.  It was a real let your hair down sort of day for us...

Of course as times changed, some media started suggesting it was gratuitous, and the Chief put an end to it by forbidding our participation.  So, we could just stay home and kick the dog instead of get out in the fresh air with our pals and have some good clean fun...

Oh, you want to know about the course... it is a nice collection of holes.  Mind you, it was before I really started getting into GCA.  But, I think it is no where near the quality and design merits of Blue Mound, or Lawsonia, MCC, etc.  Obviously, as a top CC, it is well maintained.
