I played a course yesterday that was brown with dormant bermuda that was not overseeded. The greens were bent grass. It was jam packed. I enjoy dormant bermuda after a couple of dry winter days.

The course looks like SoCal, but I can't place it...

Does BC really have FWs that are that dormant right now, or did you do some photo shopping, Aidan?  Those FWs were not Bermuda, or has my memory been totally shot?  They haven't had that much cold weather there, have they?  And, if this much dormant brown turf is truly the result of a lack of H2O for FW irrigation like Hoylake was last summer, then they must be hard as a rock and would probably be a hoot to play.  Sign me up!  ;) ;D

why many people think golf courses MUST BE predominantly green , and/or that only green turf = healthy turf, never ceases to amaze me

unfortunately I think that oftentimes a "crisis" must exist for people to change their habits/expectations

The hole actually looks more difficult to play brown.  Is is just an illusion from the photos or is there less contrast and harder to pick out the line ?

Looks nice, but there is water there. Overseed wont grow without it. Overseeding requires more water than not overseeding.

If you want to play some courses that look like this, come to Australia, and in particular Sydney at the moment - in the middle of the worst drought in 100 years. Scenes like these are the norm.

         Beautiful.  Are these photos recent?  Does the course currently look like this?  Todd Eckinrode is the man, I can't wait to visit for my first time, hopefully when it looks like that.

Barona Creek was interested to see what the course would look like if there was a problem with access to water. I believe I photographed the course in  Sept or Oct before they overseeded the course. It was an interestesting experiment and the kudoos for design belong to Todd Eckenroode. As a golfer I would enjoy playing the course whether it was brown or green.

Once again, I will say that I don't believe those FWs are bermuda.  Can anyone confirm or challenge that? I think they are a heavy blend of rye, bents, and poa.  I think Aidan just drew some lines and worked some color magic...

Wasn't there a gca-approved event at Barona Creek in the fledgling days of the website???

The course looks fantastic.  Can anyone confirm nor deny if the bunkering isn't continuing to evolve?  Check these pictures.....

Indeed there was a gca tournament at BC.  It was a Tommy Nachos inspired event.  I couldn't make it but did show up in SoCal soon afterward.  Tommy had me play Rustic in the am and Barona in the afternoon - no small feat of driving, and I don't mean driving the little ball.

After 36 holes the sun was setting and I was ready for a beer at the BC casino (visible in Aidan's pic above).  The casino was dry!!  I hope the indians who run the place by now have figured that that probably isn't the best of marketing strategies.

If there was a sandy base under that brown, maybe. Tendonitis would run rampant at inland courses in the NE if the grass looked like that. Best you can hope for(IMHO) around here and still attract players would look something like this:

Isn't the creek flow artificial?

Quite fun.. but the real question is.. if you had the choice between BC and Rustic Canyon as home club.. which would you choose?

The average American golfer who lives in the south and
southwest plays on courses that look like this as long as 5
months of the year when their warm-season-grassed courses
go dormant.  Most courses don't overseed outside of tourist destination areas.

Zoysia goes brown in Winter, and stays so quite a while. GREAT to play on all Winter, if it is well grown you will never have a bad lie. See Dale Hollow Lake SP golf course, our favorite winter destination.

Zoysia has but one drawback; if the land underneath is moist at all, it is so thick it limits your roll. On the other hand, since it practically tees you ball up in the fairway, perhaps you can use a little extra club  ;).

PS: I speak of my own experience. Perhaps zoysia plays otherwise in different soil? And I do not know what it takes to grow. That said, it is my preferred fairway.
