The "new" Nicklaus- Old Corkscrew

Has he changed his style as much I think he has?
Old Corkscrew was very enjoyable, difficult, thoughtful and beautiful.
I would never had guessed that the architect of Old Corkscrew had designed such courses as the Bear at Grand Traverse.

And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Clive Clark - Is he the one that did that awesome waterfall on the course we played in Palm Springs?  That was a waterfall that anyone would have been proud of.  Deep down, you know you liked it.

Face it partner, you have softened.  Put a baby in anyone's life and they will start to see the merits of Nicklaus, Fazio, Waterfalls, Man-Made lakes, etc.  Your life has no room for aficionado status now.  Welcome to the club.  ;D

Back in Naples, eh?

Is Old Corkscrew really worth a look?  It was the cover course in the little golf guide they give out at all the golf stores in Southwest Florida.  Those things make every course seem the same - worthwhile.

I'll take your opinion over that of any advertorial.

Couple that with what everybody is saying about nearby Concession and it seems Shooter is shooting straight - JN is exploring new ground.

If I were to guess, I would say that JN is giving more freedom to his inhouse architects who do the real designing work, and it is being reflected in the end product.

I would further guess that this took place about 5 years ago.

However, this is all speculation on my part.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I played this course recently and concur with Shooter.  This was an outstanding course, near Naples, with no housing anywhere.  It had a great mix of holes including some fun short par 4's.  The biggest surprise were the wild greens.  Certainly the most interesting set of greens on a Nicklaus course that I have played.   It was my favorite course I played in the Naples area, with the exception of Calusa Pines.

Question - does this mean that the Nicklaus designs you (and others) dislike are something for which he is/was totally responsible, but the more recent, more "acceptable" designs are the work of his inhouse architects, for which JN deserves no credit?

Jonathon,

I think that JN's style has evolved over the years. I believe that the style of many of our new courses is more in vogue especially among the GCA crowd.

Having said that, when we were building Loxahatchee the style of that golf course was obviously much different than what we do now, but well received. Isnt that the beauty of golf design? The quality of shots needed has not changed much IMHO, only the style.

As to the notion that our new courses are better because JN lets the designers dicate the design, I can tell you that is 100% false. Does each design associate have a little different style? Yes, but at the end of the day we are building what JN has asked us to.
