That must have been a pretty solid "foozle" at #1 if you could see the green with your second shot.

Where did you hit the tee shot on #3?  I don't remember any broken ground quite THAT wild-looking!

Thanks for the photos - it was a pretty day at Pennard for mid-winter.

Sean I've uploaded the latest 'Google Future' software and looking 100 years hence the first reference to Pennard I can come up with is...

"Shortly after the new Millennium the annual BUDA Cup match was contested at Pennard. It was thanks to this legendary contest that the whole world came to know and understand the genius of this layout...”

A big thanks from me also!  Those of us who are a little region locked due to family and work appreciate the images. I love the picture of the 7th green. The contours, the view beyond...OUTSTANDING! To me, that is a hole I could play over and over again. It is so natural and fitting to the land. It also seems to have a number of great pin locations.

Sean, Pennard is one of my favorite places.  I love the course and the members are terrific.  How was the condition?  When I was there the last time the members were complaining about it because it is on "common land" and the cattle hurt the course.  What's the story now?

Sean, whenever you post your Pennard pics, I longingly mumble to myself, "Ah, someday I WILL see this great course in person...."  Thanks for another set of terrific photos.

Sean,
You are one lucky man. Pennard looks in fine nick.

The "10th from the 9th fairway" is one of the best golf photos I've ever seen. Do you have a higher res version of it? It's got commercial potential.

Craig, pair that photo with the one of #16 from the tee.  Same body of water and headland in the background.  Those views to the south from the Pennard highland are spectacular.  #7 is also part of that panorama, and is very special with the ruined castle in the right rough and the remnants of the church wall on the left.

Wow Sean.

You flooked another great day by the looks of things. :)

That picture, 2nd from the right of the green. It looks like if you approached the green from that angle it would be one hell of a hole. Just looks natural but really different and could work?

A nice angle to view no. 2 green Sean.  A unique course, much like Addington in its one-offness.

Thank you, Sean, for the photo tour. I find this course creeping higher and higher on my list of "must play before I die" courses. Amazing how natural the bunkers look (gee, how do they manage to do that with smooth edges and a lack of surrounding fur ?)

<<Pennard is never in good nick.  Most clubs would be ashamed to present their course in the state Pennard does!>>

That was my experience, too.

But I've never had so much fun playing golf. Pennard is pure joy.

Sean,
Hi-resolution means that you use up the memory card faster. I'm useless as a photographer but can bore you to death with the lingo. Let's get out to Pennard next summer so you can punish me again.

Would you consider Pennard a "pastureland" course - in the same maintenance realm as Painswick or Cleeve Hill?

What's wrong with the maintenance, Sean?  Looks fine to me.  Perhaps the IMM for Pennard is "shabby chic".....

This what I love about this site, the pics of courses. Sean, great pics, few questions, are the greens good surfaces, what grasses? Have you played Clyne?
Pennard looks really under rated.

Sean, DO KEEP SHARING YOUR PHOTOS WITH US!  These are terrific.  I begin to think that there's a fabulous book to be made of GCA regulars' photos.  Real golf!

I don't think you'll find Clyne in the same league.  In fairness, I've only been there once.  It's a nice upland site and there are plenty of gorse bushes, but I really don't remember the architecture.  That could well be my fault, and if you play it and find another masterpiece, I know you will share it with the world.

I wrote about Pennnard in a book which was written over the winter of 1999/2000.  I had many misgivings.  I loved the place, but was it too quirky for golf tourists?  I also included The Addington, Bull Bay, West Cornwall, Beau Desert, Cavendish, Brancepeth Castle, Seascale, Stoneham, Hayling and other places that were at that time off the radar.  The book was slated in the golfing and broadsheet press for being too eccentric.  I did include Chart Hills, East Sussex, The Belfry, Slaley Hall, Celtic Manor, Carden Park, Hanbury Manor, Forest of Arden, The Wisley and other contemporary courses to keep a balanced view of England and Wales, but the reviews ensured that it did not sell and it was taken off the market after a year.  The companion books (not by me) on Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Thailand, Florida etc continue to sell like hot cakes.  It doesn't always pay to evangelise.

I'm so pleased that GCAers are recognising the merits of Pennard - back then, when I wrote my book, I fear it was only Donald Steel, Vicki Thomas and Clive Brown who appreciated it sufficiently to risk their reputations in print on it.

Sean,

Loved the piece on Pennard in the latest Links magazine. Keep up the evangelism! My future trip(s) to the holy land of golf may have to include your beloved Pennard.

Sean,
Other than conditioning, what factors keep Pennard from being on the tip of every traveling golfer's tongue?  Thanks for sharing the pix.

Let me jump in here, Ed.  Nothing!  Pennard is the real deal, great topography, fast and firm, incredible scenery.  The conditions are scruffy but somehow it doesn't matter.  There is some very good golf in South Wales, with Pennard at the far end.  One could easily make a trip of several days out that way.

Not a problem, Ed, you've also got Royal Porthcawl, Southerndown, Pyle & Kenfig, Rolls of Monmouth, I'm sure there are more.....
