Rustic Canyon - Name the Holes and Features
« on: December 15, 2006, 08:54:07 AM »
I had the pleasure a couple of days ago to take a "walking" tour of Rustic with Tommy and thought it was fun how many features or holes have been named or need to be...So let's hear about your favorite names that have been coined or need to be.

I don't know if it was original or not but as soon as I laid eyes on the 16th the name Fazio came to mind.  I love a downhill tee shot to a half pipe with senic views off in the distance.  It would always be a hole I would look forward to playing as it made me feel as comfortable as an old easy chair.  I submit two names.  For humor..."Fazio"  For possible use..."Easy Chair"

I played a Fazio course recently and named all 18 holes.

1. Fazio
2. Fazio
3. Fazio
4  Fazio

you get the picture?
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

at the moment you could call #16...."fire break"....totally charred on both sides!
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

One of my favorite features of the course was the small tree like bush in the lay up area of either the par 5 10th or 13th.  If someone could be so kind to verify which hole this is on I would call the hole "Bonsai".  Even as Tommy and I drove by the tree came into play for the group playing the hole...I really like the uncertanty it presents along with the recovery shots for someone unlucky enough to either be in it or behind.  A really fun little feature I would have bet would have been removed during construction.  The tree can't be over three feet tall.

JK - Bonsai would be 10.

13 would be called "Cyrano" because it desperately needs a nosejob.

Ryan,

Could you explain Cyrano for me..I remember seeing a principals nose but can't recall which hole.  I also can't be sure which hole had the biarritz greensite.  Honestly, even as the hole was completed it was as much a biarritz as the one at Lookout Mountain where one shelf is fairway and the the other green.  I would call that hole "S'uniritz".

John -

With the "walking" in "" I assume that means you took a cart.  If so, were you comp'd on the cart fee or did you pay $ 20 per person for it?

If you were comp'd the cart fee, did this have any influence on your judgement of the course?

Your friend,

Mike

Mike,

Yes my cart ride was comped but I was biased before I ever set foot on the property.  I hope to return and play someday, I just didn't have time this trip.  note:  Since I was only comped 1/2 cart and not playing priviages I did not buy a shirt, hat, hot dog or Coke.

Thanks for the picture of Bonsai...do you have any pics of S'uniritz..

I like that tree!  It ties into the "line of charm" cart path on the left and forces the player to go right, which puts him (or her) in jeopardy of being blocked out by the pyramid and/or the mini goal post if they overcook it.  It looks like the green is VERY amenable to the ground game, which is good.

I would call #10 "Long Mother Hike to the Tee."

;D

#14 - "Lang Whallop."   What a fun tee shot.

Bill, I will definitely second that! I thought I had taken a wrong turn somewhere!

Bill,

How about "Safari by foot" for #10 since it takes a bit of a stroll throught the bush to get there.

Edit: or maybe "Bushman's Delight"

I'd call 13 after it's obvious little feature off the tee.   Perhaps, McConkey's a-hole. >:(
