Friends do not let friends play Art Hills courses
« on: December 10, 2006, 12:35:24 AM »
I have been broken down. I shall back off all my all my compliments to his professionalism, work ethic etc. I just played two just horrendous Hills courses in a row. It is enough to run me out of Collier County. It is wrong how bad those courses were in otherwise good upscale developments. I shall now hang my head in shame for defending his work. I have been to hell and it is a Art Hills course in Naples. Yes there are 20 or so to choose from. that is a lot of hell.

I shall back off all my all my compliments to his professionalism, work ethic etc.

Tiger:

You don't have to go that far. He can still be professional and a hard worker. It just doesn't translate into very good results. That was a large part of the heated discussion from several months ago! Some people were defending the person rather than him work product.

I appreciate your effort to keep an open mind. I had thought that you would defend him until the end.  :)

I'll never forget the day we met John. Through the generous auspices of Uncle Boab, playing the old Shore Course. Afterwards when we talked and you mentioned your project in LA. and I asked who you were leaning towards, you said those two little words, Art Hills.

I can honestly say it took all the learnings and yearnings to quell my tounge.

On this glorious day, when Tommy realizes that there's a real America outside of  the La habra region, you too deserve a nod for realizing the err of your ways.

Congrats and welcome to the light.

Tiger, stand by for a phone call from Mr. Hills that will make Pat Ruddy sound like a UN diplomat!

And when are you planning that promised trip to Pensacola?  (It warms up nicely next week)  ??? ???

John, the back side at Renaissance (which is in the other county, BTW...) was rather interesting.  I'm guessing that course would take offense at being lumped in with the other.

You playing tomorrow?  I'll be at Rookery and wonder if anyone else will.  I'm at the Courtyard for the next two nights.  On 41.  No dinner plans Sunday.

Paging Pat Ruddy...Paging Arthur Hills, hopefully these guys don't pool their resources and buy a hit man, cuz we all know their target...bullseye
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Sean read all the Art Hills posts the last year. I have defended him for months. There are a group of guys on here who blast him like a morning contitutional each day. I just saw some incredibly poor courses. examples blind par 3 by plants, hole after hole of reverse strategy, ie none, unplayable greens. I played the Concession today to purge my mind of Artism. It is very good. Oh my Penn State friend. look on the first tee at 9AM and you shall see a Tiger. lol

Greg, I think Kyle works at the gated private club in Polk County near Bok Tower and Chalet Suzanne.

If you are asking where John played in the Naples area it is probably Fiddler's Creek and Renaissance that he is referring to as he was on the magazine panel trip for continuing education.

Just posting my obligatory "I liked Newport National a lot."

Still hoping that Brad Klein will see a thread where I post this and chime in his thoughts on the course.  I'm assuming he's played it given his proximity to Newport.  I still haven't seen anyone bashing that course amonst Hills other works.  Not sure if it is because not many have played it, or if it is because others agree it is amongst his better works.

I still don't understand the personal abuse Mr. Hill seems to get here.  Even Fazio and Rees Jones seem to have their defenders when people start griping here, but it just seems to be fine and acceptable to ground this guy's face in the mud.

Two words... "IronHorse"....

Ok, its only one word and not a very good one.

That said, the book about the construction of that course in Palm Beach county was one of the first GCA books I ever read (other was Pete Dye's "Bury me in a pot bunker") and really opened my eyes up to what really goes on in bulding a course.

Chip, John Strawn who wrote Driving the Green, used to work for Art. He now runs Jones Jr's company. I love the book as well. Tim, I saw several of Art's better courses and spent some time with him. I do admire him as a professional and a man. However, these courses in Naples including the two John mentioned are really tough to play with good architecture in mind. Yes there were holes on the Renasance which were ok. All in all is is very poor course but not the tough 30 miles of gravel road Fiddlers was. There were two good holes at Fiddlers too but good grief there were 16 really poor ones. John C, I boogied to Concession and then to Mountain Lake. Both were uplifting and great golf experiences. Now home and back to work. Calling Bill Mcbride, please call in.

Irony!!! 12-10-06. Tiger comes over to our side about Art Hills and on the same exact day, I decide that I can't help but call the LSU Tigers my team after watching them play Texas. Big Baby is just too cool. Florida Hills? That is nothing. Michigan is his home, Florida is a pretty big spotlight and Ohio is neither of those two. Which of the three do you think feature the worst of Hills? There is nothing quite like Pipestone, gentlemen.

Congrats and welcome to the light.

Adam,
I've played a selection of Art Hills courses, and of that selection, one, that's ONE, had any merit of being a somewhat decent golf course. The Pete Galea-grown-in Half Moon Bay Ocean Course, and even then it may have been the company that made it so good. That get-together was the very first get-together that some of us had from the internet back in 1997. Long lasting friendships occured bacause of it too.

The rest of the Art Hills courses I've seen are mailed-in nightmares that had me scratching my head as to why, how and who would even want to utilize him to build a golf course. Some of them are downright wastes of some unbelievable golf sites to simply dangerous. (Go witness one of their golf courses for US Homes where they are given 150 yard corridors to build golf courses. (Not neecessarily their fault, but then again, they are doing these types of jobs and creating holes that are a hazard to those that live on them.)

As far as me getting outside of La Habra, well, I just got back from Georgia, last year, I spent two months living on Long Island playing the best courses in America and spent a month in Scotland and England studying, playing some of the courses there. Some of us also have to work for a living--which after working my ass off since I was 18 years old as an electrician, hitting my 40's, spent a run of 7 or 8 years of wishing I had chosen another profession, lost interest and sort of just barely did anything to get by. I'm past that now, and I'm loving the fact that I'm a really good electrician and it's what I chosed to be--actually prayed to be when I got out of high school.

So yes, my world may seem sort of small and worthless, but actually I'm pretty happy and smarter because of the path I have chosen to take.

BTW, La Habra is a really great town to live in, just like Athens, Georgia, Baiting Hollow, New York and even some God-forsaken ranch in the middle of nowhere that doesn't have a very good cell phone connection.... ;)

So with that, how many Art Hills courses have both you and Arbs played? You to Sean. Put your money where your mouth is! Or do you work for Art?

Ditto...As stated before Newport National is among the best publics I have played. The only other Hills course I have played is Forest Akers  where he designed a few new holes, I believe, and remember them as being enjoyable.  I understand that many of his courses miss the mark but why the venom?

Cliff and Tim,

Venom?  Man this is the kindler, gentler GCA, this is downright lovey dovey. You should read some of the old threads.  Why don't you start a thread on all the great Art Hills courses you have played.

GCA is just a small but vocal minority, in the end all that matters is the Art Hills clients are happy. And he keeps getting hired so they must be.

I have listed the Hills courses I have played...admittedly small sample...not defending his portfolio only the two i have played....just don't quite understand the continued maliciousness of comments directed at Mr. Hills.  Enough is enough.

Tiger,

Whether or not you're a fan of Art Hills, I don't see how starting a thread in this fashion and with this title can be helpful. Anyone who is not familiar with the history of bashing/defending the architect - either because they're new to the site or haven't paid close attention to (or have forgotten about) the past threads on the topic - will come into this thread and see a meanspirited post with absolutely zero evidence to back it up. Not even the names of the offending courses are included! At the very least, you could have linked to past threads with which you now find yourself in agreement where you didn't before...this type of post, and indeed thread, seems to me to bring discredit upon GolfClubAtlas and perpetuates certain characterisations of the site which may exist outwith the circle of regular posters here.

Cheers,
Darren

Only Hills I "remember" playing is Palmetto Dunes.  It was a nice course, but immemorable and I wouldn't play it again without sampling lots of other near-by courses first.
