Homosassa Springs
« on: November 20, 2006, 05:21:13 PM »
Hey troops, what's the morning line on Hernando Oaks and Dunes at Seville near World Woods?  In an upcoming trip I have the new Dye course at Plantation scheduled, will see Pine Barrens for probably a tenth time and am curious about these other local two as possible additions.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

JC, The dunes golfers club (formerly seville) is closed for a complete re-do back to the original Art Hills design.

The word on El Diablo is that conditions have deteriorated beyond acceptable.

Perhaps another go at The Rolling Oaks. I hear multiple plays only enhances one's opinion.

I have never been a fan of Hell Diablo...the clubhouse looks like a beer tent, it was nothing I'd never seen before and the "hell's half acre" sign is TACKY with a capital TACK.

JC, when are you coming down?  I also hope to see Southern Hills Plantation before the year ends.

I didn't realize the Dunes is closed.  I like the place a lot.  You will enjoy it.

I played something called Skyview at Terra Vista.  It may be part of the Hernando Oaks development.  Just around the corner from Black Diamond.

EL Diaiblo was very worth playing when conditioning was optimal. I guess it's  now a victim of it's remote location.
Not enough players to maintain the course properly. What a shame.

Walter, El Diablo started on this road quite a few years ago.

I thought the course offered some really good looks and shot demands. The flower plantings were a waste of money and illustrates where the principles head may or maynot be firmly planted.

Skyview is worth a look see. If only to see if they have in fact configured the course as it was intended. The house lined holes don't offer too much, but some of the other holes traverse some decent terrain and are tranquil in their surrounds.

The Dunes will be closed Dec. 3, so if you are down before definitely play it.  It's a really good routing.  If you can finagle a round @ Golden Ocala I would surely do that also.  It's worth the ride and not too very far from Homassassa.

Dunes will close 12/3 for about a year for the renovation.

I have looked at Hernando Oaks pretty close without ever playing it. I was not impressed enough to go play it, even though its only 40 minutes from my house.

You really should play Rolling Oaks.  Its a very solid golf course.

I don't know much about the golf courses around Homosassa, but the fishing there is unbelievable.

If you are with a group, hire a guide for an afternoon. You won't miss the golf you will be missing.

Jonathan:  I'm in Boca Raton that weekend for work.  My loss.  I'll be in Naples the following.  See you there?

I love Golden Ocala, but if you are headed in that direction I'll suggest you include Golden Hills across the street.

I know some people on the list like Southern Dunes...but isn't that 2 hours away?  Or more?

Where are you going to stay? That is always one of the challenges of a World Woods and surrounds trip.

Hernando Oaks is fun, with good greens, but it has a number of boring holes and generally is not very interesting aside from some nice par threes.  Dunes will be really good after the renovations are completed.

I don't get Rolling Oaks at all - so wide and with greens so big it doesn't matter where you drive it - and its condition is often poor.  But I really lament the decline of El Diablo.  When it opened it was one of the best daily fee courses in Florida.

I have found both of the WW courses to be in very good condition for the last 6 months.

There is a TERRIFIC place to stay at world woods...just drive 15 miles to Homossassa and stay at the Plantation Inn!  Its perfect...jacuzzi, good food and QUIET!

Wake in darkness, watch the sun rise while hitting balls on the range, play 36, jacuzzi, dinner jacuzzi, sleep.

Lather, rinse, repeat.  For at least three days...

I've golfed the Plantation course and it's a solid Pete Dye course. Nothing over the top, just a well designed golf course with enough undualtion and movement to make one think.
The facility looks impressive and should quickly become a highly ranked Florida course that doesn't feel like a Florida course. If'n you know what I mean.

I am referring to the Plantation Inn golf courses at Homosassa. I think you are referring to Southern Hills.

Isn't there also a Plantation Inn in Crystal River?  We stayed there and drove about 40 minutes to play World Woods.  There is a course on property but it didn't look too exciting, very flat.

Homosassa and Crystal river are pretty close as you know. I guess the Plantation is actually in Crystal River. They had an LPGA event there 10 or so years ago.

Bill, good catch on the Plantation being in Crystal, not Homossassa, but if it took you 40 minutes from the hotel to WW, you went the wrong way.  I'm there in 20 minutes...maybe 25 maximum.

I make it in 30 from my house. Maybe I should rent the spare rooms.
