Engineers 13th, the ideal half-tree gate?
« on: October 25, 2006, 11:54:44 PM »
I think so, what do you think?

The 1938 aerial in my office shows clearly that the tree gate was the dominant design feature on the 13th back then too:

The further left you get, the better the angle opens up:

and further left:

the perfect location off the tee:

The front right portion of this green is used regularly and is the defintion of nerve and exacting . .  .

One question that I have for Tom MW is if he knows how the slope in front of 13 green was maintained?  Was it cut at fairway height?

I do think I'd like to see it mown to fairway height.

Jason, I seem to recall the left side of the tenth green at SFGC as qualifying. Only it was more of a limb gate.

How could we exclude the Chipoat tribute tree guarding the front right of the 18th at PB. Definitely a contender.

Adam:

The best part about the hole, IMO, is the deception off the tee . . . the fairway looks huge and I tell first time guests try to hit it just short of the bunkers on the left and they all think I'm crazy until they see what they've got from the right side of the fairway.  Here's the tee shot (and I'm happy to say that cart path has been converted to packed sand):

And here's what they've got after hitting the right side of the fairway:

Welcome to Engineers  ;D ;D

Bump.

Doesn't anyone have photos of other good half tree gates?

I don't see any half trees there anywhere and I am not sure one tree can make a gate. :)

Of the top of my head, isn't this more like a tree pivot point? Or some other more descriptive term?

Jason,

It's an interesting looking hole.

Are there any contingency plans in the event the tree/s at the corner don't survive a storm or bolt ?

Jason,
How tall do you think the tree was in the 1938?

Do you have any plans to join any other clubs soon? This board is on the verge of being renamed engineerscountryclubatlas.com

I don't know if it was fairway or not. My guess looking at how he appears to have shaped the ground in front of that green it was fairway.

Sean
Those trees were about the same size when the course was built. The fairway bunkering is a newer development.

The approach looks protected by an unkept low area and higher grass up the front slope, is that correct?

Just out of curiosity, what would a contingency plan be in this scenario?

Would this be considered a gate hole? Its about a 90 degree dogleg

The approach from  the right side of the fairway after the tee shot
