USGA Senior Amateur Championship
« on: September 15, 2006, 08:45:10 AM »
Anyone playing this week at Victoria National Golf Club in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship?
Victoria National is located in Newbrgh Indiana just outside Evansville.
Have not seen the course but I understand there is water on 15 of 18 holes.
Does anyone know the course?

Dave:  I was out there when it was under construction and then just after it was finished.  It's a really neat piece of real estate - pretty basically built on the strips of land between dredged fingers of a strip mine.  I'm sure Fazio didn't have to move much dirt as the routing was almost total before he started.  It has held some PGA club pro events and the scores have been high.  If the wind is blowing I think it could be  akin to Kiawah in the wind - very scoring resistent.

Dave,
I played there about a year ago.  Solid course.  I thought it was difficult, but with a caddie they could guide you around well.  I actually shot well there when I played.  It was recently ranked #21 by Golf Digest, a ranking which I think is a little high for the course, but an interesting piece of property for a golf course and a unique setting.  In my personnal rankings it's in the same category as World Woods, Wild Horse, Harvester, Hazeltine, Redlands Mesa, Lakota Canyon, Pine Needles, Kingsley Club.

Keep an eye on Western Pa's Paul Schlachter. He has as good or better chance of winning it as anyone, I would think.

Three Sr. Am players quailified for the Mid Am- Greg Reynolds, Randy Nichols, and I can't recall the third. Reynolds (Sr. AM Defender) missed match play. Nichols made match and lost first round (I referreed.)

I may get down there next Tuesday for a look-sy.

When did Greg Reynolds win the Sr. AM?  He is not the current defending Champ. Was it a couple or three years ago?

Hey Dave!
Greg won the Senior Am. in 2002 at Timuquana. I normally see him around the holidays at Timuquana. He takes in a quick round with Tom Dudley or another member that was heavely involved in the Senior Am prep.

Mike Rice, the defending champion in the Senior Am was also at the Mid-Am.  He didn't make match play.

Reynolds did make match play and lost to Tim Jackson in the first round.

Dave,

I was in a serious auto accident when an SUV doing about 55 hit me and totaled my car as I was waiting to make a left turn.  Then, due to all the rain, the club hosting the qualifier instituted a "no cart" policy, and with the damage to my knee I couldn't walk.

Even if I was healthy, the qualifying score might have been beyond me.

Chris Neff,

Hi.

I enjoyed Timaquana despite all of the rain leading up to the 2002 event.  The club was extremely hospitable to the contestants and their guests.

Please say "Hello" to Tom Dudley for me, he was kind enough to contact a friend of his who arranged for a tour of the JNAS for my son, who loves airplanes.  Tom was one of many members and staff who made the experience at Timaquana so enjoyable.

I also ran into Mark at Charles River when I played there.
He recognized my swing and I recognized him, although, at first I couln't make the connection since I associated him with Timaquana.

Tim Simpson is a terrific player.
He must have learned the game in NJ. ;D

Pat Mucci,
I'm glad the airbags worked properly and you were able to walk away. SUVs doing 55 can cause a lot of damage.

Pat Mucci,

Peter,

The airbag never went off.

I was hit in the rear, blasted into and crossing the oncoming lane where an oncoming SUV just missed me due to that car's alert driver swerving to avoid me, I then impacted an 8 inch curb, going airborne and into a guardrail.

The police, who were there quickly, wouldn't let me out of my car until the ambulance arrived despite my repeated attempts to get out.
When one of the officers asked why I was so intent on getting out of my car I told him that I needed to check on some items in my trunk, my golf clubs.
That's when he told me that I didn't have a trunk.

I had two sets of clubs in my trunk.
Fortunately, they escaped unscathed by taking residence in my back seat.  Only a spare 3-wood laying on the floor of the trunk was demolished along with everything else.

I was told that rear end collisions don't trigger the air bag, but, I don't understand why it didn't deploy when I impacted the guard rail.

Had I had my foot on the brake, the outcome wouldn't have been so good.  The driver of the SUV never saw me despite about 500 yards of unobstructed roadway and plenty of room to my right.  She later said that she panicked and hit the gas instead of the brake.

It just goes to show you how quickly your life can change, or end.

Glad to hear you are ok.  Did the clubs survive? When will you be able to get back into playing shape.
First round of match play at Sr Am suspended due to heavy rain with first group on hole 14 and some of the field not yet on the course.
Will resume tomorrow at 8:30 AM

If you are still coming tomorrow look for me around the course. As i had a small committee to chair I will have a nametag/member lanyard neckside. Would like to show you around and share some good match play scenes. Two ex champs are at it firstround and on thirteen with one 3 down when play resumes.

Jaka B possibly had his feelings hurt ?

Just got back from Texas after a round with Brauer and Duran...Never been much of a golf fan but do hope the rains soon stop.  I can almost guarantee that one club has never worked so hard and given so much to host a Senior Am...The one thing that counts is that we have a great membership but unfortunately someone has to be the weakest link.

I can almost guarantee that one club has never worked so hard and given so much to host a Senior Am...

20 years ago rains prevented Interlachen from allowing golf cars.  With school in session and a dearth of caddies, the members stepped up and made themselves available.  Men, women, seniors.

Customary caddie fees were collected and a rather large donation was made to Western Golf.

Following the success of their first big event in a very long time, the membership opened themselves up to other events of note and have been awarded a US Mid-Am (which was never held because they took the Walker Cup when Chicago wouldn't 'open the membership'), a Solheim Cup, and the Womens Open.

Until I see Jaka with a bag on his shoulder, I'm not sure I buy that.

Regardless, the event is again a big success and the membership of Victoria National should be proud.

Dave Miller,

The clubs, miraculously, survived.

I'm off to the orthopedist this morning.

Say "hello" to Gale Sanchez for me, he's quite a player.
We played together at NGLA this year.

As Arnold said, "I'll be back"

My plans were delayed by 1/2 day. I'll be in Evansville for my meeting tonight and at VN tomorrow (Wed.) AM. I'll look you up at the tournament office.

Thanks. Look forward to seeing you.
