your choice: public/resortcourse costing less than $100 to play
« on: September 08, 2006, 04:15:30 PM »
fate has decreed that you can only play one course for the rest of your life...it has to be a resort or public course or muni/etc. that costs less than $100/round to play

which course do you pick?
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

Great question.

Four answers spring to mind:

Wild Horse
Rustic Canyon
Black Mesa
Bethpage-Black

And out of those three, put me down for Rustic, the only one that would allow year-round play in decent weather.

No question about it

Wildhorse.

Come to think of it, if it's public access/resort and it's >$100 I think the answer would be the same.

JF - I love Wild Horse without a doubt...

But in winter wouldn't you wish for warmer weather? Remember this is one course and one course only....

Same question for Mark L. re Bethpage....

I'm not certain of the exchange rates these days, but wouldn't some British and Irish courses merit consideration?  Enniscrone or Carne, for example?

Huck - since this is a fantasy question Wildhorse would actually be located in Arizona w/ a fine pickings of top resteraunts, some fall/spring baseball & other assorted scenery!!

Huck-

You definitely are reading these posts (in multiple threads) VERY closely.  And I do agree, winter would be tough in NY.  I'll have to scratch the ol' noggin a bit more....

Someone said a while back that residents of St. Andrews can get a year's pass to TOC for 113 pounds.  Not sure, but that might have covered all the courses there.  Pretty hard to beat.

Bethpage
Playing every round at Bethpage sounds good to this 35 year old, but I'm not sure if I'd feel the same way when I'm forced to walk that monster in my golden years.

I've been burned too many times by NOT following the letter of the law re questions like this.

So yes, while in a sense it is fantasy - or perhaps nightmare for me as I don't think I'd like having to play ANY one course alone for the rest of my life - well, Paul said nothing about magic weather.   ;)

But in any case... great call by those adding in UK courses.  There are quite a few that would be less than $100.  But then the weather issue comes up again... Rich G. waxes poetic about winter-time Scottish golf, but well... I don't think I'd be one to CHOOSE it.

If I do not mind leaving the USA (and my family and friends), the pick is The Old Course at St. Andrews (if The Old Course does not qualify for this game, then The New Course).

If I have to take into account that I will want to live near this course since I can no longer play at any other course and must take into account everything else this locations has to offer, and I do not want to leave my family and friends too far away, the answer is AL Gustin in Columbia, MO.  A great quirky course in a great college town.

TOC is gotta be more than $100, yes?!?!?

Paul - I think we can count TOC as less than $100.  If that is one's only course, a fair assumption is that one lives there... and if one does live there, the annual pass is available and while I don't know what that costs, there is no doubt it would come out to WAY less than $100 per round.

And yes that is a lot of ifs.

 ;D

And I still go for Rustic Canyon.  Weather matters.  So does access to US sports, college and pro.

But, if one lives near St. Andrews, is the TOC still over $100?  Nevertheless, I could enjoy playing The New Course for life (and then caddying TOC).

I think Bandon Dunes is under $100 if you do it year round as a local and do a fair amount of 36 a day.

Well, if I only get to play one course for the rest of my life I might as well enroll at Univ. of St. Andrews or become a professor which would allow you to stay in St. Andrews year round ... and get the local or university rate ...

That's really pushing the qualifiers, Tiger.  ;)

And remember you only get one course... I assume it would be Pacific Dunes?

I hate to pile on, but Tom is right it has to be Rustic.  Location, weather and you would never get bored.  If Wildhorse could magically change the weather (calling Al Gore), then its WH by a nose.

That's my thought exactly re the weather - give NE SoCal weather year-round and I'd take WH also.  But alas and alack that is not the reality....
