Best Club Practice Facility?
« on: July 29, 2006, 09:43:15 AM »
What are your picks?I nominate the new practice area at Isleworth in Florida:

From golfcoursenews.com:

Isleworth building a practice area

7/28/2006

With his second consecutive, and third overall, British Open championship under his belt, Tiger Woods may not need an improved, state-of-the-art teaching and learning center as much as the dozen other PGA Tour players who live at Isleworth Country Club in Windermere, Fla.

Nevertheless, the private community has already begun construction on a comprehensive practice facility with greens grassed with different types of turf and bunkers sporting a range of sands in order to simulate play at other venues; and a short-game area boasting a number of fairway and greenside bunkers of varying depths. A second phase of the project, awaiting Orange County approval, will extend the driving range another 50 yards to 380 yards.

“We are constantly re-evaluating our amenities,” says Isleworth general manager Kurt Kuebler. “In doing so, we’ve known our weakest amenity was our practice facility. Our goal is to improve it and make it more valuable for all our members as well as our Tour players.”

Kuebler says Woods, Mark O'Meara, Darren Clarke, Stuart Appleby, Robert Allenby, Charles Howell III, Lee Janzen and other Tour players who live at Isleworth normally spend more time at the range than on the golf course. So, the new practice area, being designed by Steve Smyers who recently completely redesigned the Isleworth golf course, will replicate the conditions and shot values, found on the course.

“At Florida Tour events, golfers are playing mostly on Tifeagle Bermudagrass," Kuebler says. "But if you’re practicing for play elsewhere, you may want to practice on those other turfgrasses to see how the ball is going to react. So, Steve is hoping to implement other grasses into the design.”

From his nearby offices in Lakeland, Smyers says, “We are building one large putting green and two pitching greens, with shots up to 130 yards. And, in the second stage next summer, we will produce target greens — some multi-tiered, one with a false front, and others possessing other looks — that will make it appear that you’re on the golf course.”

Isleworth proved its commitment to the project when it removed two multimillion-dollar lots from the market and annexed them into the new practice area.

Kuebler says Tiger, O’Meara, Appleby and other members are providing input on Smyers’ design.

Members, as well as those Tour players, will appreciate that the end result will produce yardage markers that are far more visible and precise than at traditional ranges, Kuebler says.

“We’re furiously moving earth right now,” Kuebler adds. “We want to sod it so it will be open by late September.

The practice area at Kinloch is tough to beat.  The short game area consists of three greens that are surrounded by various slopes, collection areas, and different bunker depths, so you can simulate practically any shot.  The greens in the short game area and on the range are maintained just like those on the golf course, so the ball reacts precisely as it should.

The range itself is dual-sided with target greens, fairways, and bunkers.  The teeing ground was recently increased by approximately 40% so now no turf needs to be hit off more than once every few months.  On the back end of the range there is also a short par 3 built with fairway allowing you to tee off anywhere from 130 yards in.  Fairway bunkers of various depths are also present to practice that aspect as well.

The teaching center is a really cool building on the range.  There are 3 heated hitting bays, all with video and launch monitors.  There is also a small lounge inside that also houses the library for the club.  Members from other clubs have provided numerous club histories from their courses, so it's a really neat place to take a break from practicing, watch a little tv, or do some reading.

Jimmy,
I totally forgot the practive area at Kinloch. I love the short game area as it's 360 degree with many different options and angles. I could spend hours there...I'll have to get there extra early next time!

Did'nt Baxter Spann design a PF at Black Mesa, that doubles as a seven hole kids course?

Quite ingenious.

Has anyone else ever used their practice greens in this manner?

Best range for hitting full shots to greens is Trump in WPB
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Pretty hard to beat the set up at Isleworth-some good ones I've seen:
Public wise-   Bandon is tops I think.
Privates-  Old Sandwich had a great set up with all that video stuff and cameras everywhere .
                            Shady Canyon.
Toscana- a big 36 hole development in the Palm Springs area had all new Pro V's stacked in nice pyramids.

Beeen a while since I was there, but World Woods was awesome, and ties Bandon for best on Public side.
Best on private side I've seen is Kukio on Big Island of Hawaii.

HAven't seen all the facities mentioned, but Bekllet Hall is by far the best I've seen. 350 yd double ended range (with big fans for the hot, humid days), 3 acre short game area with 3 huge greens, water hazard, bunkers and rough just like those on the course, and a wedge ange with six targets from 25 to 125 yards.

I would agree with everyone that's mentioned Kinloch. It's the best private that I've seen. The best resort that I've seen is Sea Island.

Old Palm in Palm Beach Gardens has a pretty good set-up, including three practice holes (pars 3, 4, and 5) and a short game area.

Friars Head is head and shoulders above all others.  The par 3 course is adjacent to the back end of the range.  The width allows for practice in all wind directions.  In addition, it has a state of the art teaching studio.  The practice putting green is at least 20,000 sq. feet.

Not wanting to be a complete killjoy, but - why in the world would you want a water hazard on your practice facility, if not for some ridiculous imagined bragging rights heirarchy?? If you chunk your practice shot, you chunk it.. surely noone needs to dredge a pond because of that..
And again, not wanting to be mr. negative all the time, I thought World Woods facilities were pretty cool.

Sand hills does not belong in this conversation. it is the one thing they do not do that well. I still say Bandon Dunes tops them all and this includes a nice facility at Friars head. I have not seen the course in Virginia but Bandon tops the Florida ones hands down.

Why is Kinloch so good?

Jimmy Muratt's post is a fine description:

It's big, and everything you need to work on your game is right there.  It is also my favorite practice facility.

Sadly, I haven't been to Bandon or Sand Hills (yet!) but Caves Valley CC in Owing Mills, Md. has the most immense and detailed practice facility I've personally witnessed (2002 US Senior Open). A member commented that nearly $2mil was spent on it (can't verify that).

I couldn't find any images, but a quick Google Satelite Map and you'll see what I mean.

Bill
