Let us Count the Ways... PacDunes has beaten us down
« on: July 17, 2006, 10:12:40 PM »

It always amazes me how many severe natural hazards we were able to incorporate into Pacific Dunes and how few people actually complain about them.  There are a bunch of places on that course where you can get absolutely screwed over ... and yet it's wildly popular.  Must be the ocean views, I guess.

From another thread...

We've already hit some of the obvious ones such as the bunker on #6 and the bunker on #18.

The soft dune to the right of #1 has botched an entire round for me before.  While I think it is fair to assume that I shouldn't have been there in the first place, I'm not the only one I've seen over there.

Another other personal favorite spots to get screwed (figuratively speaking, of course) at PacDunes?

I think Tom hit the nail on the head - this is a great place to play match play!

My number one call would be right of the first fairway, definitely.  Playing from the tips, that dune still gives me the creeps from 1500 miles away.

Hit it in there, and even if you take your medicine and play out backwards, putting it in the fairway is no bargain.  It's a 1.5 stroke penalty.

I must confess, I wasn't playing the tips when I found my way in there.  I was playing the green tees.  It was my first ever round there, and I was playing "smart."  I took a 6-iron off the tee, and promptly duck-hooked that sucker into no man's land.  4 swings and a toss later, I was back in the fairway.  I was mortified that I couldn't even card a score on the first hole I ever played there.

Fortunately, I got over it rather quickly and just enjoyed the course.

Duck hooked?? Are you left handed?

Thankfully, I started my Bandon experience at BD - had I shown up at PD at 650am looking at that tee shot, I would have probably soiled myself.

Tim,

That's impossible.

I'm the only one who can hit the left-handed, duck-hooked 6-iron.   :o :-[ ;D

Mike,

With all due respect, I don't think you could even come close to re-producing my effort at PD.

Oh Tim, if only that were true.

Lee Trevino said he hit a fade because "you can talk to a fade..a hook won't listen".

When I start hooking, not only doesn't the ball listen, but instead seems to want to run as fast as it can to a place where I'll never be able to find it and hit it again.

"I'm the only one who can hit the left-handed, duck-hooked 6-iron."

I can top that. How bout a 7 iron? It's more of a pull though really.

I got in that mess and just went over it. I guess I was lucky it settled in a flat place with room to clear the dune.

My trials started on hole 4. Pulled a 5 iron out onto the beach. Cya.

Sliced left of the traps on 9. Did ok to get close to the green from there.

Had to go over the trap on 6

Came up short on 11. How I don't know.

Hit one of those lovely traps on 14. Brutal lie and stance.

Thinned a wedge over the 18th green.

the left greenside bunker on 11 offers a tremendous lip about 6 ft in height.

the bunkers in 17 are about ten feet down

the left fairway hazard on #2 is very deep

most play out of the bunker behind #16 right on over the green again.

The back and forth is popular at Pacific on both #6 and #16.

Played with a fella who had 17 pars and a twelve on #15.  Kept trying to use a wedge to hit a chip shot.

The shortish length of Pac is more than made up for with the threat of taking a snowman
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

Not after the shot I hit in this picture - try dropping a 40 yard flop shot on that green with crap short and long from a firm tight lie - I took an X when I couldn't find my ball in the junk beyond the green.

Thats ok, I was in that crap off the tee and don't think I ever found my ball again. I would have gladly taken a chance on being in your spot instead.

As Tim will attest, anywhere on hole 17 is a hazard to me (probably average a 6 on that hole).  I've hooked it (I'm left handed too) into the shrubberies on the right a couple times, pushed it left and lost, and played out of the front bunker too.  The only time I played it half decent was in the pitch black darkness I missed a 4-foot par putt and made bogey.

Come to think of it, that's the only time I've played that hole without Mr. Bert.  I blame him.

The bunker that I find rather merciless is the dune bunker left of the 4 green.  I got in there once and was relieved when I walked off the hole with a 7.

I witnessed an awesome sandy par from the lower right bunker on 14, the one that is also in play on 13.

The key to Pac Dunes is hit it solid and straight. I have not always done this but the course turns into a pussycat when one does so.

Genius take, Tiger!! ;)

That's what I've been doing wrong.

I've been long and left on #3 twice and it has beaten me both times.  You definitely don't want to be in the gorse back there.

The ways that place beats you down are limitless.

My problem has been to hit it left on 4. From the tee, you obviously guard from going right so the tendency is to pull it into the rough or towards the cluster of fairway bunkers. It is impossible to get home from the bunkers and if you are coming into the green from the left side rough, it is almost impossible as you have the ocean behind and to the right, mounds on the left which if you land on them, the ball will kick towards the beach, and you cannot run it up from that side. I think the best play (having blown that hole several times) is to play short and just in front if you are in the left rough or one of the fairway bunkers. I would also be happy with a bogey on that hole most of the time.

and next you'll tell us that the key to putting is merely an issue of speed and line.

My favorite miss ever at Pacific Dunes was during grow-in and before there were any yardage markers.  I was just carrying a handful of clubs and hitting a few shots.  On the approach to 16, I guessed the yardage wrong by about twenty yards, took a bigger club and tried to play a cut, double-crossed it, and my 7-iron shot carried OVER the left corner of the dune behind the green and rolled all the way down into the big sandy bowl in front of #2 tee!

And I came very close to getting it on the green from there, my eye-witness said I carried it about ten feet too far and wound up in the front right bowl.

Has anyone ever seen anyone hit it into the small gorse bush which is part of the bunker just short of lower 9 green?  I've had the bunker shot from there over the gorse ... fortunately I didn't fluff it.

My brother hit it into there the first time I took him out there last year. Said he didnt even see the gorse bush untill his ball flew into it.

Sadly, yes.  My best ball partner and I BOTH managed to hit it in there at the same time once.  We both made 5s, though:  I was just on the edge and hacked it out, while he got up and down after taking a drop.
