Bandon, good golf but bad....
« on: July 14, 2006, 09:59:05 PM »
We had 2 groups of our members who just got back from Bandon.  They raved about the golf but said everything else was bad, poor food, poor service, just not what you would expect.  Has anyone else heard or expierenced this?  They all liked Pacific the best btw.

Bummer, my wife and I will be there for two rounds next week.  ::)  I will report back.  With spouse along, bad food is not tolerated, there's not enough drinking time first.

Been there multiple times, usually with groups in tow, and I've scarcely encountered a problem with staff, service, food (too much of latter, as portions are vast!). Rooms are designed for guys, and so there's not enough space for hanging out clothes; also, the bathroom lighting is awful so shaving and (I'm told) make-up are difficult. Also, there's not much space for drying out your rain gear at night. Otherwise, I can't think of a reason to complain or find it lacking.

Laura and I stayed in a Lily Pond room last year, played 5 rounds in 3 days, and were treated like royalty.  First class all the way.

Note that we actually drove into Bandon City for dining - We love the fish and chip stores on the bayfront.

For whatever reason I wasn't overly impressed by the food at the restaurants.  However the food they serve at the "halfway" houses was awesome.  The chicken bacon ranch wraps blow any hotdog of the face of the Earth.  I'm tempted to say it was on par with the golf.  Honestly I still talk about it all the time.  I must have ate 10 of them in two days.  We didn't stay at the resort so I cannot comment on the service.

They probably were expecting a five star resort where they wait on you hand and foot and have haute cuisine.

I thought everything was terrific with only one curiosity.

After a mediocre massage from a talkative 45 year old woman,  I entered the men's shower located virtually adjacent to the massage room where three or four other men were showering. Instead of heading off in a different direction she followed into the  shower area and simply conversed with all the naked men while we cleansed.

The next night was the same scenario except she was already talking with a group of showering men when I arrived.

I didn't bother to question management as I simply didn't want to be the one to spoil her little gig. I always wondered what the situation was in the ladies locker room. ???

I really can't understand how people from Kentucky could complain about Bandon...of course after hearing of TEPaul and Miss Hancock I'd believe anything.

This best food I had on my trip was the steak and egg special at the casino beginning at 11 pm....I started off with two at $6.99 each.

That's exactly the kind of press that will keep Bandon great.
If they ever get raves about the food and service be prepared for the six hour round crowd.
Please tell me they don't have a spa.

Perhaps the biggest curiosity of all at a service level - they claimed to only have ONE clothes dryer - you'd think they might have a few more, heck even Coin Operated ones, available to the guests in such a habitually soaked locale.

Bandon doesn't have a drying room?  If not it is a major oversight for a seaside golf resort in the neck of the woods.

BTW  For the prices this place charges the rooms, food and service should be very good.

They have a drying room in the basement of the main lodge.

I find that odd.  I'm from a foodie town (NYC), and I think the food there is fantastic.  The service is better than I get at the Four Seasons.  They will literally do anything you request.

Was just at Bandon the weekend before July 4th and have been going to Bandon faithfully since the summer of 2001.  Over the years I've come to expect the food to be decent but not great.  It is about the only thing that is not consistently excellent at the resort.  But I'm not going to Bandon for a culinary experience.  ;D  Although, after walking 54 holes on Saturday, the meatloaf with an Oregon microbrew was pretty amazing!

Not sure which Bandon your friends went to, but I have been there twice now, the last time two weeks ago, and I found nothing of the sort in your description.

This is the premier golfing destination in the US now and I haven't found anything negative about it, other than it's hard to get to!

Nick,

I have been to Bandon with a group during each of the last 2 Masters weekends.
We have always raved about the food, the rooms, the service and practically everything else about the place. I cannot imagine the place could have the kind of problems you are referring to. As well as being competent and helpful, the staff were just plain good people. If you were looking for a place where the staff gush all over you, never take off their white gloves and are constantly in your face asking how the service is, you were at the wrong place.

Gene,

Why fly across the country when most of us can get that at home?  ;)

No, I think they have very good service and the food is good. It is not a luxury resort nor does it pretend to be. I have been there 4 times now and the only thing which is changing is more golf courses and more people as they add rooms. It is not for people who really want to be in Cabos who play a round or two of golf. It is for golfers who want to play golf.

Just thought of two things:
1.  They overcharged us for our 2nd round on the same day.  Took about 10 seconds to remedy, but make sure your bill is correct.

2.  You'll get a kick out of the wake up call.  I won't ruin the surprise, but let's just not say it's the old two rings and a dial tone.

Lasty, I really sugggest you try to get into town for some food.  For a casual meal, there's a pizza place in town on the E side of US101 that had a LOT of Bandon golfers whenever we visited.  I also highly recommend the blue fish and chip place on the waterfront, or the place next door that will help you catch a crab and they'll cook it for you.

I think the food is fine.  It's not outstanding, but it is edible, and I'm not really going there for the food anyway.  When I'm there, I'm golfing as much as possible.

I prefer the food in the pub to the dining area.  I could really just eat Clif Bars the entire time, and not be disappointed, except that they stopped making the best flavor - Cookies'n'Cream.

I've never been disappointed with the service.  People aren't following you around making you feel claustrophobic, which I prefer.  When you need something, they are attentive, and they stay in the background otherwise.
