The Other Worcester GC
« on: May 13, 2006, 09:00:12 PM »
I played the Dick Cup at Boughton Park today.  Worcester is an old Dr. Mac track that still has 15 holes of the original layout intact.  I think the greens have been tempered a bit and the bunkers slightly toned down from Big Al's day.  Still, the biggest change is trees.  This club needs a tree surgeon desperately.

I think the photos will highlight very narrow greens which are heavily bunkered.  It is essential to attack the greens from the fairway.  Approaching from the wings is very difficult.

The 1st from the side of the green.

The approach to the 2nd.  A very good par 4.

A closer view of the 2nd.

The approach to the par 5 4th

A closeup of the green.

The long par 3 6th

The approach to #7.  This hole slopes severely to the left.

From behind the green.  The severity of the slope is evident.

A lovely 175ish par 3.  This hole is nearly the same as the original.  There is a cool false front green.

The 12th is a very good hole.  Believe it or not trees have been cut back!

From behind the green.  The three tier green and severity of the hill can be seen.

The drop shot 13th.  Notice how close ob is on the left.

#15, another narrow green.

Behind the 16th green.

Another view of #12's three tier green from the 18th fairway

The 18th from an excellent drive.

The clubhouse.

All in all not a bad course.  A steady diet of good yet not stellar holes.  Probably a low 5ish on the SRA scale.  Could improve a bit if several hundred if not a few thousand trees were removed, but that ain't gonna happen.

Ciao

Thanks Sean.  A pleasant surprise as I thought that very little was left.  Some old pics for comparison, which I think you have seen before (squint when you look at 'em, it helps):

I'm sure we can ID some of these holes (18th!).  With all the trees, are the Malvern Hills still in view??

Paul

From first to last of your photos I think #2, #8 (though it would have been a different # in the old days - maybe #12), #6 - this one I am not sure about (I think it would have been a different # in the old days - maybe #10) & #18.

I see that even the good doctor had a penchant for sticking bunkers next to water!  It looks as though some of the flair of the bunkers is gone, but the depth looks the same.  It also looks like the tree issue were similar to today.

Sean:

I didn't see too many trees in your photos which really spoiled the play.  However, the bunkers have been rounded into oblivion -- the "after" photo of #8 is really sad once you've seen the "before".
